Vanessa is a bilingual (Spanish/English) therapist who treats a wide range of issues such as depression, anxiety, addiction, eating disorders, relational issues, grief and loss, as well as assisting the client with life transitions. Vanessa uses an eclectic approach to psychotherapy that is mainly influenced by existential, humanistic, behavioral and cognitive theories. Her therapeutic approach is tailored to your needs and strengths, and our developing counseling relationship becomes a major factor in the process and positive progress of treatment. During therapy, Vanessa will help you clarify issues, identify points of strengths, and aid you in discovering appropriate ways to deal with the identified problems. The main objective is to help you identify emotions connected to your stories, manage symptoms associated with the issues presented, and gain new skills in order to resolve issues and struggles in a more appropriate and positive manner.

Since graduating from Western Seminary in 1999, Vanessa has worked in a variety of settings with a diversity of populations. First she began her counseling career at Friends of Youth, a residential treatment facility working with sexually aggressive youth. She worked with individuals struggling with sexually aggressive behavior, mental health issues, physical, emotional and sexual abuse trauma, and attachment and developmental disorders. There she became a Lead Residential Youth Counselor to youthful offenders that needed 24-hour supervision. She facilitated treatment groups, trained other staff, and managed a caseload.
Vanessa also worked as a managed care counselor at Southeast Youth and Family Services. She worked in the community providing treatment to a diversity of at risk youth. Vanessa used many tools in her treatment planning that included cognitive restructuring, behavior management, social skill training, anger/emotional management, and moral development.

Later she became a school based mental health counselor at Youth Eastside Services where she worked in both middle and elementary schools helping families and their children. There, Vanessa provided treatment, advocacy, group counseling, referrals to community resources to a diversity of youth with behavioral, emotional, financial, and language difficulties. In these schools, Vanessa actively worked with the Hispanic population giving them support and advocacy through government and school district systems. She also offered individual and group therapy to their children, and became the language liaison between families and resources in the community.

Recently Vanessa’s work as a therapist has included helping individuals and teens that struggle with a diversity of issues such as relational conflicts, addictions, mood disorders and eating disorders. Her work has broadened her interest to women issues as they relate to health, family of origin issues, societal expectations, sexuality, spirituality and how these factors may contribute to deficits in mood, self-image, and self esteem.
