Therapy for Extreme Times
Trauma therapists are specialists in dealing with the treatment of individuals who have suffered extreme, shattering experiences. They use many different techniques for dealing with trauma, and come into a patient’s life at various points after a trauma has been experienced. Their focus is on dealing with the many reactive conditions left after shock and trauma have occurred.
Kinds of Trauma Therapy:
- Long and short term trauma counseling.
- Various schools of trauma therapy.
Short-Term Emergency Therapy
A patient may experience trauma therapy in the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event. Whether an accident, an act of violence, a natural catastrophe, or a sudden loss, there are many professionals in caring professions who are also trained as emergency trauma counselors. You may find these pros among the police, in emergency rooms, and acting as paramedics. Many ministers receive trauma counseling therapy as well. From rape counselors and Red Cross caregivers to nurses and doctors, the list of people who may have been given training and knowledge to help you in the first stages of reaction after a traumatic event is extensive.
This form of therapy is intended to help a patient cope with the first shock and pain of an event or experience, and to lay ground work for later healing. It’s not intended as a long-term commitment, but as a fast and effective emergency treatment to ensure a victim is given the best chance for later healing. More extensive therapy may be pursued later.
Long Term Therapy
Long term therapy may actually not take all that long, if a patient has been lucky or well enough prepared to handle shock, grief, pain, fear and other traumatic emotions effectively. In instances where the damage proves to be minimal therapy may be rather brief, dealing with any unresolved emotional response.
For some, trauma therapy should be more extensive. Trauma can cause severe reactions that can have a major effect on the life of a victim. Depending on the trauma, PTS (post traumatic stress) can trigger anxiety attacks, panic, violence, anger, severe depression, sexual dysfunction, social withdrawal, and more. The repercussions of a cataclysmic event can echo through a victim’s life for years to come if not successfully dealt with in therapy.
Approaches to Trauma Therapy
There are many ways to approach treatment for trauma, depending in large part on the symptoms and the counselor. Method can range from behavioral modification aimed at teaching the body to let go of panic responses, to talk therapy to help a patient consciously work through unconscious reactions. Among the first concerns will be to establish a secure, sensible environment for future work, and a relationship of trust between the therapist and the patient.
The process of rebuilding a secure life and stable boundaries after traumatic events can be a matter of long, serious work. Trauma affects a patient on the deepest, least easily controlled levels of self, and changes the way a person understands and responds to the world. To recover from severe physical and emotional trauma can take many years.
Care in Selecting a Long Term Therapist
To find a counselor, you should seek referrals through multiple sources, including professional referral services. Follow up with interviews, and arrange to have a trail period before committing fully to one therapist. Once you’ve made a commitment, however, don’t drop it without consideration. If the bond between a counselor and patient is fundamentally sound and honest, it’s often wise to continue the therapy together if possible.
