What Sports Coaching Can and Can’t Do

While obtaining a sporting coach can mean dramatic performance improvements, it isn’t fair to expect supernatural results. While you may have lofty goals and aspirations, the real focus should be on producing a new “personal best,” regularly and consistently. While a sports coach can improve your results in virtually every area, they can’t transform you into Superman. Aiming too high can lead to a great deal of discouragement. Unrealistic expectations will never aid you in your quest to get better in anything, a sporting event or otherwise.

The Role of a Sports Coach

When you think about it, the roles of a sports coach seem unlimited. They are there to serve as an advisor, an assessor, a counselor, a demonstrator, friend, mentor, an endless fountain of wisdom and knowledge, role model, your manager and your number one supporter. Furthermore, a coach’s job seems never-ending. They are needed in the “newbie” stages of a sport to teach an athlete the rules of the game, how they’ll train and what is important to overall success. Then, once the athlete has shown that they understand the basics of their sport, then the coach must work hand-in-hand with the trainer to discuss and come to an agreement on what training methods and requirements are appropriate. Finally, after an athlete understands the ins and outs of their sport, a coach is still needed to serve as a mentor and “cheerleader” of sorts whenever required.

Skills Great Sports Coaches Possess

If you’re seeking a sporting coach, there are a number of critical skills that will make the both of you more effective and productive on the playing field. The first of these skills is organization. Not only will you need a training schedule created you’ll also need to create an overall, comprehensive training plan that takes into account major goals, games, dates and other timely considerations. Sports coaches must also know the key components of safety and the proper training mechanics dealing with the sport they specialize in. After all, the dynamics of golfing are drastically different from those of basketball, even those both demand getting a ball to land inside of a hole. Coaches must also know how to build relationships and rapport with the athletes they work with that establishes trust and respect over the long-term. Furthermore, coaches need to have the ability to instruct and explain logically and clearly, offer demonstrations that offer kinetic learning opportunities to their “students,” have a keen eye for observation and be able to offer relevant, constructive feedback that will allow athletes to improve future performances.

It is essential that the sports coach you ultimately select is dedicated to upholding the ethical standards of your particular sport and doesn’t believe in bending or breaking the rules. If you even suspect that your coach may embrace unethical practices or attitudes, run in the opposite direction as fast as you can.
