Worms are vital parts of our agricultural systems that help our plants grow and are very useful in bringing down air and fertilizer into our soil. However, worms are best kept underground as they are also considered to be gross, slimy creatures to most. Scoleciphobia is a serious fear of worms that can carry symptoms similar to serious anxiety disorders or panic attacks. Usually, this phobia can be linked back to a traumatic event early in life and can later be treated successfully through a health professional or alternative self-help options.

Causes of Scoleciphobia

Scoleciphobia is generally caused by a traumatic event experienced by a person at one point in their life. In this case, the event would have to do with worms or any similar creepy, crawly insect. From the time of the trauma, the inflicted person will unfortunately be forced to relive or remember parts of the event whenever they are faced with a worm. This phobia can also be traced back to a fear of infestation or contamination, although this is far less common. If untreated, this fear can cause a person to avoid leaving their home or enter any environment they feel worms would be present in. This can lead to a wealth of problems, including depression.

Treatment of Scoleciphobia

There are a number of different ways scoleciphobia can be treated and these should be sought out if you feel that your fear of worms is starting to negatively impact your personal life. Most methods of therapy require you first to seek out a primary physician in order to receive treatment.   • Traditional Therapy: You will be asked to talk through your fear with a professional and begin to understand the root of the issue.
  • Self Help Methods: If you are seeking to personally treat yourself, self-help breathing or relaxation techniques are a great way to maintain your composure in stressful situations.
