Methadone Addiction Treatment

Methadone is a drug that is used to assist in physical health and rehabilitation. Methadone was at one time primarily used to assist in detox programs for other drugs including opiates. The onset of an addiction to Methadone is not surprising in that this medication is used in the place of other pain medications that have not been very effective. Doctors prescribe Methadone as it is extremely powerful and when it is needed in the most extreme circumstances. Because of its power, doctors are required to keep record of all Methadone prescriptions they give.

Brand Names for Methadone Include:

  • Diskets
  • Dolophine
  • Methadose

Side Effects

Addiction to methadone is very dangerous and immediate treatment should be sought when it is discovered that addiction has taken place. Many side effects associated with taking methadone include drowsiness, lightheadedness, weakness and fatigue, feelings of euphoria, dry mouth, difficulty in urination, trouble breathing, constipation and a host of skin reactions including irritation, itching or hives. Those who have experienced addiction to methadone may have discovered that it does have adverse reactions when it is combined with other medications.

Overdose

Overdose is a severe consequence to an addiction to Methadone. Overdose can occur with continued abuse of the drug as well as when taken in combination with other narcotics. It is important to seek immediate treatment if the following symptoms occur as an overdose may be in progress: very slow breathing combined with drowsiness to the point of unresponsiveness, cold, clammy skin, low blood pressure, pinpoint pupils of the eyes, and slow heartbeat. In the most extreme cases, breathing problems can become so severe that breathing may stop completely. If this occurs, the person can be rendered unconscious and death can even occur.

The first step to recovery from Methadone addiction is seeking professional help. Only then will professionals be able to access the addiction with a straight path to recovery. Physical addiction treatment will take place, followed by some form of counseling. Support groups are also a good way to follow post-rehab treatment. Joining a support group is imperative as it allows the person suffering with the addiction to be able to relate to others who have suffered with
similar addictions.
