Dextromethorphan Addiction Treatment

Even the slightest of cold medications can become dangerous. Dextromethorphan is a drug that is commonly found in cold medications. But what starts out as a simple remedy for a mild illness may turn into a fast, downward spiral into addiction.

Dextromethorphan can be found in a variety of different forms. Those forms include chewable tablets, cough syrup, dissolving strips and other liquid forms. An important fact to note about Dextromethorphan is that it is specifically used to aid in coughing spells, however, it is not necessarily a cure for a cough. This is what makes this drug easy to become addicted to. Users of this medication start off by simply taking the medication as a cough suppressant. But over time, the drug can induce effects similar to marijuana and even LSD. These effects are brought about because the actual drug, dextromethorphan, is in fact a relaxant. It slows the system and bodily functions down, therefore, creating a relaxed state.

Side Effects

There are some debilitating side effects to an addiction to dextromethorphan. Some of these side effects include nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing and failure of the ability to pass urine properly. It is important to note that an addiction to this powerful drug can lead to permanent, damaging side effects to the user. According to the Mark Houston Recovery Center for Men2, the addicting effects of this drug are so damaging that the Food and Drug Administration has stepped in to help regulate the sale and purchase of over the counter access for dextromethorphan.


It is imperative to seek out help for your loved one if there is suspected abuse or addiction of a drug that contains dextromethorphan, as overdose is a sad possibility. It is important recognize that it is rare that the person who is suffering from the addiction will actively seek help on their own. Therefore, it is extremely important that if you know someone who is battling an addiction to dextromethorphan to find help immediately. Physical addiction treatment will take place, followed by some form of counseling. Support groups are also a good way to follow post-rehab treatment. Joining a support group is imperative as it allows the person suffering with the addiction to be able to relate to others who have suffered with similar addictions.
