Demerol Addiction Treatment

The introduction of modern medicine has provided for so many scientific advancements in human health and treatment. Demerol1 is a medication that can be directly correlated to the well being of human life, specifically mothers and childbirthing. However, when used improperly, the drug Demerol can cause unpleasant side effects, which will eventually lead to addiction. Those suffering with an addiction to Demerol can experience tough times, but there is always a solution.

How Demerol can be ingested:

  • Orally
  • Pill form
  • Liquid form
  • Injection (the strongest form of intake)

Demerol is the brand name for the drug meperidine. Meperidine is a narcotic prescription as well as the only pain reliever medication in the opiate class. Demerol has typically been used by physicians to give to women during childbirth. This drug can serve other purposes, but is mostly used in hospitals and other inpatient facilities as it is easier to monitor patient intake. It has been approved for usage during childbirth by mothers because of this fact. What Demerol actually does is change the perception of pain in the spinal cord and the central nervous system. This in turn, provides a range of pain relief spanning from acute pain relief for minor injuries to severe chronic pain. Demerol is the most powerful when it is injected, which is the reasoning behind why many physicians do not prescribe it to be taken outside of a hospital or inpatient facility. Because doctors do not prescribe Demerol as freely as other medications, the addiction rate has decreased.

Short & Long Term Effects

Demerol is most specifically not to be used by expectant mothers. Only during the child birthing process has it been approved. When addiction occurs with this drug, there comes a range of short term effects. These effects include a euphoric feeling about 10 to 15 minutes after use and this can last up to 1 to 2 hours, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and disinterest in sex. Other effects can be more severe and are long term. These long-term effects of Demerol addiction include seizures or convulsions, anxiety, kidney failure and mood changes. Please note, if you notice any of these symptoms, seek help immediately.
Demerol is a tricky drug in that with this particular addiction, it is much more difficult to overcome as the withdrawal affects are so severe. Any type of withdrawal will bring on some discomfort, however, with Demerol, the physical effects of withdrawal are astounding. These effects include muscle and bone pain. It is important to contact a substance abuse center with around the clock observation and medical care so that the effects of withdrawal can be lessened. There are many different types of rehab treatment centers and some even offer a holistic rehabilitation approach. With an alternative holistic approach, emphasis is placed on the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient. Many drug rehab centers accept several different forms of health insurance in addition to offering several self-pay options. Seeking help immediately is the first step towards recovery.
