If you have a dream of helping people overcome major challenges to eventually adjust to a happy, healthy lifestyle, then this might be a great occupation for you. Drug rehab counselors spend time helping their patients overcome addiction, as well as deal with withdrawal and psychological issues, giving them tools to stay clean, and doing their very best to make sure their patients remain sober and successful. It is a very demanding job and takes a toll emotionally, psychologically and spiritually, but for those who are passionate about it, it’s a wonderful life choice.

Some areas that need drug rehab counselors include:

  • State and community departments

How Do You Become a Drug Rehab Counselor?

Becoming a drug rehab counselor requires a lot of effort and education. First, it’s important to receive your Bachelor’s degree in a field like psychology or sociology. Next, it’s best to go to graduate school to earn a higher degree. You’ll need to make sure to keep a good grade point average, and make good connections with professors so that you can ask for letters of recommendation. It’s an excellent idea to volunteer with various outreach programs prior to applying for grad school, because these opportunities will boost your appeal and show your real interest in the field. It’s also important to attend a graduate school that is accredited by the Counsel on Rehabilitation Education. While attending grad school, it’s helpful to intern with a certified counselor to increase your knowledge and experience. Eventually you will take the certification exam. Your next big adventure: finding a job as a drug rehab counselor and continuing the journey of helping those in need.
