Has anyone here tried hypnosis for anything like quitting smoking or dealing with anxiety? One time one of my therapists did this but I just couldn't relax enough. I also have a hard time meditating because I can't quiet my mind. Any suggestions or comments?

I know exactly what you mean. I can't be hypnotised and have problems meditating also. It is so bad there are times I can't sleep at all and wind up staying up all night. I had to start taking medications to make my mind relax and slow down enough so I could sleep.

I think that the hypnosis you are referring to are those that you see on TV.  I do think that it's not like that.  It's more of like guided relaxation, where your therapist guide you to become more and more relaxed so that you are more open to suggestion.  Take note that it rarely happens that you go completely blank and you become subversive so much so that when he tells you to cluck like a chicken, you do it.

Next time level your expectations with your therapist so that you'd know what to expect and not come out of the experience disappointed.

I have always wondered about hypnosis but quite honestly I have never tried it for anything.  For one thing, I really cannot afford it, but for another, it feels a little like mind control, and that's a bit unsettling.

Hi everyone,

The only hypnosis I've done was to quite smoking. It didn't work. But only because I really didn't want to quit smoking.

One thing that I believe is you are ALWAYS in control during hypnosis. No one can make you do anything you don't want to. There is a difference between Brain Washing, Visualization, Meditation and Hypnosis. I think most of us practice Self Hypnosis all the time. Or at least try to. If we get stressed out, we try and calm ourselves down, as an example.

I tend to gravitate more towards Visualization. It has helped me in my career (to be honest it's what started my 30 year career) and other aspects in my life.

I actually have heard that about hypnosis, that it can't force you to do something or to go under if you really don't want to.  Not to trivialize anything, but considering this, does that make all those TV shows with plots about hypnosis getting a person to commit murder is completely impossible, or if someone has some secret murderous intentions, could it happen?  Egads, what a question.

If hypnosis can really cure us with our problems then we don't need medications anymore. I haven't been to a hypnosis treatment but I think the purpose of this treatment is to let us pinpoint exactly the problem and will give us a clear mind on how to solve it. But still the decision is ours to make.

I've always wondered how hypnosis works. How would it work in a therapy session? Ichsabel mentioned that it makes you more open to suggestion. Is that supposed to help give you alternative solutions to your problems?
