It's been a few years since I've seen a therapist, and I've moved since I last went. I'm thinking it might be time for me to go back. The only thing I know about picking a good therapist for me is that I prefer to talk to a woman. What are some other good criteria to look at when you're trying to find a new therapist?

As you have hinted, there are personal preferences to choosing a good therapist.  So that would help narrow down your search.  But the first question is, why do you feel the need to see a therapist?  How are you feeling?  Knowing that, you can easily target a specific group of therapists who could be of help.  Then, ask your friends and family about their own therapists, you may get something there.

Talk to the therapist by phone, that way you can get a sense of his or her knowledge and would be able to ascertain if you are going to like her or him.

I would like to tell you that there are some healthcare provider rating Web sites available, but they are problematic.  One is that not all providers are listed on these sites.  The second is that it's easy to pay for a good review.

I think asking my friends and family for referrals is a good idea, although it might be a little uncomfortable. I really like your idea about talking to a new therapist on the phone first. I've never thought to do that, and I think that might really help. Going in to meet somebody with no prior knowledge about them has always been intimidating for me.

It is not easy to trust someone with your problems that only you would know about. So the advice of knowing about the therapist would ensure your safety.

Remember, certain goals require more time to reach than others. You and your psychologist should decide at what point you may expect to begin to see progress. It is a good sign if you begin to feel a sense of relief, and a sense of hope. People often feel a wide variety of emotions during therapy.
