What do you do when you think about suicide?

My life's going ok now, but like most, I've had my tough times. Thankfully, at my worst I always knew that I had family that I couldn't let down. I didn't care about anything regarding my own happiness, but I knew killing myself would cause my family tremendous pain. What are other good techniques to convince yourself suicide isn't the answer? Life isn't always easy, but I think it's important to not give up.

I'm glad family was something that saved you.  I wish that would work with more people, but it doesn't always.  I believe a person just needs one thing to latch on to, like family, or maybe just the notion that tomorrow is be a new day.  If they can just make it through today, tomorrow can be a new start.

I have 5 beautiful daughters and so therefore just the thought of them makes me not even consider suicide. I also try to list all the good things in my life that I do have. One other thing I think of is that there are people out there that are much worse off than I am. Basically make a list of the positive, good things in life.

Rhyannon, listing all the good things in my life works well for me when I just have moderate depression. When I was to the point of thinking about suicide though, I don't think I had the judgment capable of looking at things like that. I agree with both of you about the importance of having something like family to cling to. I can't imagine how hard it must be for those who don't have that support in their life.

GillyPaddy,

how can you say you have nothing?  It might be a good idea to sit down & make out a list of all the things & people you are grateful for.  After that list why don't you take a look at your physical body & appreciate that you have been blessed I hope with two eyes, two ears, two hands, two legs, a set of lungs, a liver, kidney's & a heart etc.  Then think about the fact that at the time of your conception, you actually fought against others to come into this world.  You are not some random person who is lonely, depressed or without family.

After thinking about these things at least for a couple of days, sit down again and take a look at what you could do to help someone else in this world or what talent you might have that might make another person's life a little sweeter or easier.

The world might not be giving you all that you desire right now, but you have no right to even consider taking your life.  If you are terminally ill & have been told that you do not have much time to live, then there are people out there that can help see you through your pain.  Otherwise, in my opinion you really have no right to consider suicide.  Especially if you are quite young because you can never know what lies ahead for you.  Good or bad, you need to be here for the duration until your time is called.

Try to make the most of your life by taking care of your body & yourself & by being grateful everyday for all that you have.  Once you do that, you will see that giving to others is one of the greatest things you can do to feel better about being alive.

Whenever I have a showdown with my spouse, the easiest thought that comes to my mind is 'suicide'.But then, thinking about the pain and agony I would be leaving behind for my loved ones, makes me calm..One thing I realise is,suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problem..So best is to talk..or go for counselling..

lorealpearl,

what is a showdown?  Are we talking about an argument with loud words or are we talking about physical violence?  Please advise.

Just wanna answer the title/question.
I sometimes think of suicide when I feel depressed and lost, but it never happened, I don't know why, maybe because I just don't want to end that way.

suicide is one thing on my mind too when i'm down, but i always think outside of the box, so in the end i tend to be on the brighter side rather than beating myself.
