Which is a greater cause of addiction problems, trauma or genetics?

I've heard that often a person will turn to drugs after a traumatic event. From my experience though, genetics is a greater cause. Addiction is common in both sides of my family, and I can't think of many traumatic experiences my family members have had that have brought on this problem. They seem to have normal lives, but they like to party too much.

I tend to think it's more genetics. Especially when one considers that drugs and alcohol are not the only addictions. Some people are addicted to sugar, to caffeine, to exercise, even. I think there is a propensity to become addicted that is genetic.

I have to say that in my case, it was a combination of circumstances that lead me down the path of addiction.  None in my family (that I know of...lol).  I realized in treatment that I left a lot of issues and experiences unresolved and they built up into a mountain of pain.  But the more I know about addiction, the more I find that it is a combination of genetics and experiences that pushes poeple in that direction.
