Wikipedia a sorry excuse for an encyclopedia

Wikipedia, you suck. You're a sorry excuse for an encyclopedia
and a sorry source of pictures.

I don't care about
the (C) of a 20-year-old out-of-print book or game. Stop reducing
the cover size because of America's f***ed-up copyright rules. I
want the picture because I want the damn art. It's 20 years old.
Get over it.

I don't care if
that's a non-free image used to describe wormholes in an article
about "Stargate". Dammit, that's the whole point.

I don't like your
crappy "free" images used to describe space anomalies. They look
like crap and I want good art like they had in 80's National
Geographic. Where's my good science art?

I don't care if
that paragraph about Yuuzhon Vong in Star Wars is too long. I want
detail, I'm a fan. Don't truncate it.

So what if I want
to see a picture of star so-and-so? What the hell defines a "free"
image anyway? If I want a picture of an actor, I'm gonna go
someplace else, but I'd rather get it directly off my Wiki article
while I'm thinking about it.

Wikipedia, I don't
like your format. I don't like your lack of good art nor your
needlessly harsh policies against posting images. You're an
encyclopedia. You're supposed to preserve knowledge, not strangle
it. I thought you were supposed to be a "free" encyclopedia but
apparently you're not, you're just another big
hypocrite.

Now if you excuse
me, Imma go off and pop in Compton's Encyclopedia 1997. It's waaaay
more fun and exciting than stale ol' Wikipedia. It's got multimedia
and high-resolution pictures!!!

By the way
Wikipedia, could you bring me a Coke?

Oh crap. That's
copyrighted too o.0

It's
not wikepedia puptent. It's thanks to trial lawyers and our legal
system. The answer is torte reform, as it is with the medical
catastrophe we now face, amongst other things.

was nerdy enough to read that much, i have a shelf in my bedroom
dedicated to star wars, over thiry books, all six movies and the
documentary, sorry i know you were ranting about wikipedia, but
when i read that line i had to do a double check, i mention that
word anywhere and everyone is like "what the hell are you talking
about" may anakin solo rest in peace, and jacen solo for all the
sacrifices he made, lets not forget the one and only grandmaster
luke. wow, just went on a star wars rant, this might be another
reason why i am single lol

But
Wikipedia is free. People work on it for free. They dont make money
off it. The editors dont. Its a non-profit.

"free" images are
those with GDFL (public license) or with a Creative commons
attribution and so on.

You gotta remember
its free.

>> Now if
you excuse me, Imma go off and pop in Compton's Encyclopedia 1997.
It's waaaay more fun and exciting than stale ol'
Wikipedia.

Oh come on, that
one is outdated. 1997? Wikipedia is updated every day, every
second.

>> I don't
like your lack of good art nor your needlessly harsh policies
against posting images.

They have to
because they dont allocate money to buy images since everything is
free and fair use. If you need pictures wikipedia is not a good
place to get them. But sometimes there's stuff there that you wont
find anywhere. The people who edit will take pictures of things and
put them there.

But finding the
exact picture you want is always hard no matter what website it is
and --- finding a really good picture sometimes also costs
money.

Wikipedia has to
worry about non-free use, they'll get sued for pictures and so on
so yea, its not that bad. Its the 4th or 5th most popular website.
The tonnes of money they raise in donations from the public to
cover their hardware and minimal personnel costs attests to the
fact that people like and appreciate wikipedia.

Ok assuming your
rant was a joke.

if u
want good astronomy pics go to the NASA site.

Astronomy picture
of the day archive:

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/ap.....vepix.html Wikipedia is a
good "lazy" resource then expand from there to other sites for more
detailed info. Cross referencing u know.

I appreciate what
it provides for speeds sake.

Yea. the F'n legal
system of STATUTES< all about $$, monopolies and limitations not freedom of knowledge.

The internet used
to be wide open, info and images easier to obtain, downloads
available without trojans or viruses. Now it's become more
capitalistic and controls are added with each passing yr.I can
understand people protecting their creations to a point if they use
the internet to provide insome and that is one of the shifts.
Another business outlet to generate income.

We're all having
to fight to preserve and maintain what should be our rights. Times
are gonna get SCARIER and scarcity, or controls, seem to be the
plan for all us Pee_ons.

to
guest_guest, My thoughts and feelings about Wikipedia are valid and
important to me. I feel bad that you would want to minimize them by
assuming my rant was a joke.

MsGuided- I agree with what you said about "Times are gonna get
SCARIER and scarcity, or controls, seem to be the plan for all us".

Hey
Puptent!

Don't let GG's
comment ruffle your feathers. You attacked one of his favorite
sources of info! lol

He did, however,
make some valid points about Wikipedia.

Hope you're
well!

Hi MsG!

Ok
puptent,

So you werent
joking. Ok. You dont have to be too sensitive about it. Oh if you
thought that was insulting, you havent seen anything yet, lol. I
was actually being very kiind. Come on lighten up now. Dont make me
give you a link to the ligthen up page on Wikipedia.

Ok
anyway.

My reply to you
stands: Wikipedia is free, millions of editors work on it - for
free and:

for
free:

- they take
pictures themselves, release them to the public (that means even
people outside wikipedia can use them). Thats why I said you'll
find pictures there that you wont find anywhere else.

- they contact
people on the internet asking for permissions

- they get
whatever "free" pictures they can that other people have
taken

If they cant get
any rights to a picture or screen capture, they'll do a "fair
use".

They do all this
work, for free.

I've edited myself
at wikipedia a bit so yea, I know all these things. For you to say
that Wikipedia is junk, and a sorry excuse for an encyclopedia and
trash and all that, I didnt like that. However I responded
rationally, I didnt take it personally and I educated you about
Wikipedia. Its not perfect, but its not bad for free --
right?

There's a reason
why its the 4th or 5th most popular site on the internet and
there's a reason why Google search for any term usually always
involves a Wikipedia page, often ranked as the first
result.

Its not perfect
(ask me, I can write a whole page about that), however its not junk
either. Remember again: Tonnes of people work on it for free. There
are so many regular editors who do nothing all day except work
there, for free.

There's something
that makes them do that. Its knowing the fact that a certain page
that you can edit, will be accessed by everyone on the internet so
you realize how important it is for the page to be right and so
on.

There are some
editors who have more than a 100,000 edits and some a lot more.
Some have taken 1000's of pictures and released them on GDFL
(public license, free for anyone).

So what kind of
pictures are you looking for?

to
answer one of your questions:

- What the hell
defines a "free" image anyway?

A "free" image is
one where its rights have been released to the public. Anyone can
use it even for earning money. For example an advertising can copy
that picture and use it in an ad and earn money off it and thats
fine, because its free. This is a free license.

The rights stuff
is _not_ easy to understand.

Another type of
license is creative commons by attribution. That means anyone can
use the picture (even the advertiser) as long as they attribute it.
Attribution means "This picture was taken by XYZ".

So I believe those
are the two kinds of pictures. If Wikipedia people tell you
something, they know what they're talking about it. If those people
told you that certain picture isnt free, it isnt.

But tell me what
your situation is.

Ooo,
it looks like you tried your hand at editing there. Its not easy
for a newcomer - lots of policies (like a good city has lots of
laws otherwise the city will end up being called a
jungle).

But yea, so whats
the problem.

Google "stock images", but you gotta pay. Lots of sites that
have good pics but you gotta pay, if you ever find pics that you
like, i.e.

How about, a
picture is worth a 1000 words, so a high res picture must be about
10,000 words. Get them from the lorem generator, j/k.

But if you've
looked in those places then thats all I know.
