I think folks are overreacting a bit. I do not think that the SC is banning the discussion of religion or discouraging people bringing a spiritual perspective to things here. I don't hear anything like censorship, just a request that we be sensitive, respectful, and context-appropriate in our speaking of religion, just as we are expected to be regarding other topics.

Coda Mom, I would especially hate to see you leave because I think it is very valuable to have the perspectives of Helping Professionals here. I haven’t read your every post, but I have not heard you beating any religious drum. Your posts have had a lot of common sense, warmth and I experience your advice as clinically sound. So I wouldn’t take the SC’s comments too personally.

Religion is one of the most volatile topics—even more of a hot button than sex for many people. Take a look at the current state of Iraq, for instance. Many families make Politics and Religion forbidden dinner table topics for that reason. We just need to be sensitive about that. Given that we have been allowed to have pretty close to carte blanche over on the liberation brew side, I don’t see what all the fuss is about. We can debate and philosophize all we want over there, so what’s the problem?

Chill out, folks.

WD,
Appreciate you perspective as usual.

Thing is Christians do not have a "religion"...Christianity is not a religion. And being asked to refrain, is not fair to anyone. No one ahs offended anyone.

and being asked to stop goes against the Guideline Tips up above the threads. Read them...it is all unfair, illegal, and hypocritical to me.

CODA Mom left because many Christian counselors cannot even counsel a person without counseling the 'whole' person. Difficult for some to beleive, or undrestand.

I think the fact of her leaving, even as a professional and that she decided to leave in spite of the fact she was helping people, is that she was asked to do something she cannot do...which to me? Shows WHO she gives her allegiance to, where her FAITH stands...think about it...we do not preach to people, and if we feel so strongly about this? It must be real...many have left.

Regarding TJ? Yes it is true...and I choose not to debate that, as it is trivial at this point in time.

OMW,

You wrote:

"and being asked to stop goes against the Guideline Tips up above the threads. Read them...it is all unfair, illegal, and hypocritical to me."

And again, I don't hear SC "asking people to stop" or banning anything. SC is just asking us to respect context.

As far as Christianity not being a religion...

Best I can tell, Christianity is based on the following ideas:

1) There is a God.

2) God created the Universe and has expectations of people regarding their beliefs and behavior--expectations which, if not met, will result in punishment, usually described as HELL.

3) Jesus is the Son of God and recognizing that is essential for a person's spiritual salvation.

All three of those ideas about invisible, unprovable things, systematized and toaught as dogma. If that is not religion, I don't know what is.

A person does not have to reference religion in order to employ the teachings of Jesus in a helping context.

Sigh.... thanks worried dad. You're a man after my own heart.

However, religion is also Muslim, Jewish, Wiccan, etc. Some religions don't believe in Jesus Christ--Jesus who?

So... if Christianity cannot be referenced directly, then so cannot any other religion.

I will be vigilant in pointing out the no-gooders who voilate this rule.. Hee.

Not upset at all. I think a few people are overreacting. This is a great place and religion doesn't belong here.

WD, as I told Tez above in LIBS, we just beleive in a differnt God...and we all have free will. No judgements on my part, so I will not try to argue your beliefs stated above, mostly out of respect for you. Would do the same for anyone.

But what if you were told not to help those in abusive situations, as they are very graphic at times, due to an opinion.

It would only be an opinion. It is who you are..you have lived it, you live it daily in your work, and you give wise advise here.

Abuse is ugly, but my point is, wouldn't you feel miffed?

I do not mean to criticize you or anyone, but it would be nice to be respected for my, as well as others beliefs on this website, rather thna those trying to prove a point against my, and others beliefs.

NO ONE, NOT ONE has said to any one, after ALL of the help, that has been offered here....
"We appreciate you, and all that all of you who profess to be Christians have offered on this site. We do not judge you, we do not agree, but this site is for all opinions and expression, as the Guideline Tips state."

Most seems to think it is it necessary to badger, judge, and try to actually change the beliefs that are held. That is not what we are here for. Unless it is life threatening, no one seems to tell anyone what to do...most are suggestions to help.

This is Drama, you are correct. It all started with one person expressing a distaste for others beliefs. It was never confronted by SC, but jumped on when someone else admitted their discomfort.

I can so much agree with what you said on my way.It started with one person expressing distaste for other beliefs.I really believe that too.I was sitting here and posting to everyone else and reading their posts and it appeared to me that that was the case.

I also can agree with WD that the sc wants for us to respect one another and not to judge on ones beliefs.

I am starting to understand now more and more.I'm glad i did not leave yet but unfortunately some did.

Religion is a very touchy subject and as codependence we do tend to overreact to things without looking at the matter more carefully.

kathygy,

I have been reading the diff. threads and been noticing your posts as being truly out of line, sometimes even downright hateful,i.e.,

"I am glad to see bible quoting people leave this site."

Not cool. Lighten up.

bonita, I feel that people are judging me and I don't like that. I feel that you are judging me and what I have to say. I feel a need to stand up for myself. I feel that a lot of people have reacted to me because they don't like what I have to say. I am only in agreement with the SC and the new guidelines. I am merely speaking my truth and will continue to do so.

This really saddens me. I have tried to stay neutral on this point but as is so typical when politics or religion are debated, wars start. It seems that a war has started here between people who previously relied on each other for comfort and support.

Of course we all have our views on politics and religion and it is our right to retain those opinions. However, even if we have different opinions, we have a common trait here........ we all need each other.

Please don't let religion drive us all apart. I for one need each and every one of you and value your different opinions. You have all helped me through the worst 5 months of my life and I would hate to lose any of you.

I think it is unfair to say that kathygy's post was the only reason, and I understand that she kind of feels atacked. Of course, when you are a christian, and when you find talk about christian religion helpful and comforting you propably haven't noticed how much space it has been taking up on the support threads. I'm told to stopp reading a thread, when I don't like the cristian references there - but who are you to tell me to go away, maybe I would be able to help with a problem, tha initially wasn't about christian perspectives at all?

I'd like to add that I know a lot of deeply christian people who I like and respect. They live according to their religion, and hardly ever mention it. Maybe this *being very vocal about being a Christian* is an American thing? It seems quite strange to me from an European contintent / German speaking perspecitve.

No, I'm not upset about the religion guidelines.
