Some info from Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior (SACOM):

Last summer SACOM published "Looking for Mickey Mouse’s Conscience - A survey of the working conditions of Disney’s supplier factories in China". The investigation discovered all four of the target factories were in serious violation of Chinese Labour Law: wages were far below the statutory minimum, averaging less than $0.35/hour; working hours greatly exceeded the maximum standard, averaging between 12-14 hours per day and sometimes even up to thirty hour shifts; and occupational injuries were prevalent, with an occurrence rate of 2-3 times per week.

After the publication of last year’s report, SACOM attempted to engage in dialogue with the Relations Department of Disney Corporation but Disney continuously avoided addressing the problem and was unwilling to assume any responsibility. This summer SACOM conducted a follow-up investigation into the progress at three target Disney suppliers and discovered that the problematic things exposed in the previous year’s report had certainly not improved. The Disney suppliers are still in egregious violation of the Chinese Labour Law and Disney’s own Manufacturing Code of Conduct. The campaign against Disney continues.

Workers from one of the supplier factories, Qi Sheng, submitted a complaint letter to SACOM this August detailing some of the factory’s most egregious violations, the extensive cover-up and falsification schemes employed to fool corporate auditors, and how all the workers’ demands for justice to management and the government have fallen on deaf ears.

Shortly before filing the complaint they went to the local Labour Bureau to file a complaint that the factory does not pay wages on time (wages are usually retained for 70 days) or give the proper overtime compensation. The government Labour Bureau was no help, directing them only to an arbitration board the workers could never afford.

Until learning about SACOM, workers felt they "were left with no recourse, no means of finding a proper channel of complaint". In their letter, the workers requested that SACOM "help us to contact the factory’s buyers and inform them that our factory is without principle, our boss is without principle."

In response to the disturbing investigation results and the workers’ complaint letter, SACOM has built alliances with a number of unions and campaign groups in the US and Europe such as the Writer’s Guild, Sweatshop Watch, USAS, and CCC Austria to launch round two of the campaign against Disney. For further information and copies of both reports see: SACOM.

good info. and definately timely. it is a shame that so many large corporations operate without a conscience. it is definately the responsible of the consumer to become knowledgeable about what companies you want your money supporting. with so many choices in the marketplace finding a retailer that coincides with your values should mean that in most cases you should not have forego products that you need or want. it is so easy however to just spend money and not question the operating practices of a company but until you do you never know what you might be supporting
