Each year on Christmas Eve my hubby's family all settle around and someone reads the Story of Christmas... Jesus' Birth.

I wanted to share this special time of mine w/ ya'll. So, settle around and read on...

The Birth of Jesus

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The Shepherds and the Angels

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Luke 2:1-20

Thank ya'll for taking the time to spend w/ me and reflect the true meaning of Christmas.

Please take any nasty comments and post them on a new thread. This is a special time for friends to share, and I'd like to keep it humble and warm.

Thank you.

mamac,

I love the story of our Lord's birth. Thank you for posting it, and merry Christmas!

Did you know that shepherds were looked down upon in Biblical days? The Talmud discouraged people from helping shepherds. So the angels appearing to shepherds would have seemed like an oxymoron to the ancient Jews.

Did anyone catch the Chrstimas-themed short stories about Christmas that were read on NPR on the 24th? They were very touching and also humorous.

One was read by a young girl and was the story of her going to an urban middle school with Jesus. THere were lots of great lines like how Jesus was the only kid who actually liked every kid in the school--even the dirt-poor crazy kid that nobody would sit next to in the lunch room.

Another was the story of an underemployed Jewish guy named Joseph who had to get his pregnant wife to Bethlehem in time for the census. He was just getting over his jealousy that he was about to be a father, his embarrasment that the child would be considered illegitimate, and his astonishment at the idea that it was some kind of holy spirit or angel who was the father.

He was like ....Gee, if I can't even get a decent job, what do I have to offer a baby, especially an angel baby. And what if the baby is born with wings, or even worse, with only one wing? I'll tell you one thing, if that stupid neighbor of mine makes any cracks about "hows the illegitimate angel baby" I'm gonna smack him right in the kisser.

WD: When you look at how us humans think and the things we worry about and are bothered by and fret over as in the stories you just told..... isn't any wonder we would need a savior?

Cute stories.

What is NPR?
