A very wise Lama traveled from the East to meet a Native American Shaman.
He asked: "Please now tell me how your people speak of Spirit?"
The Shaman said "My tribe, my people, we do not have a separate word for Spirit. We can only Be Spirit."
The Lama's face burst into a wide grin and he said to the Shaman: "You are my friend!"

To be indwelled by the Spirit rather than see it as something outside of yourself. And if Lama is indwelled with the Spirit, then he will have more in common with Shaman if Shaman is as well.

The esoteric impulse--to transform understanding of spirit from a mere "word," something abstract and outside of us, perhaps in the sky somewhere, to something very real and immediate.
