Hi Shaney,

I'm right there with you gf! It's day to day with my puppy too. Sometimes hour to hour.

He sleeps a lot and his breathing is labored. But he eats, so.......

I don't like leaving him either. Even tho my son (who loves him dearly) is here, I feel like I'M the only one who really knows how to take care of him.

I'm still hoping that when it IS time, he'll somehow let me know. I am hoping that when it is time, he goes in his sleep. I've never had to put any of my animals down before. But he's been my best friend, so this is really hard.

Because of all the other STUFF going on in my life too, I was really starting to stress out. So I decided to just do what it is "I" want to do. I'm tired right now, and if other people around me (including my kids) don't get it.... TOUGH!

You know Hep, my last border collie had lymphoma. I was up and down all night with him and never got any sleep. It's so hard, I know.

Now, I'm doing the same for Shaney - up and down. I'm SO tired all of the time - I feel your pain. I fall asleep at my desk several times a day and wake up startled, thinking, "Crap! How long have I been OUT?"

I've have enough animals to know that they most definitely DO let you know when its time. But you do always question yourself no matter what. It's all so sad, really, but we do get through it. (((hugs to all of us for hanging in there!!!)))

I'll see how the next few days go before I decide whether or not to go out of town. I'd never forgive myself if she passed while I was gone. And I hear you, when you say that you feel no one else really knows how to take care of them. I think she would flip out if I left - sh'e so used to me catering to her! Ah well - lets just try to be kind to ourselves through all of this and not feel bad about taking care of US. :o)

Hi,
Well, I had to finally put my puppy to sleep this morning.

I was up most of the night because he would whimper and he couldn't get up anymore. I told myself that when it got to the point where he couldn't get up, that would be it.

Hugs to all.

Hep

Thanks bevdee and camer. I know he's out running around with his buddies, probably chasing squirrels.

The mornings are the hardest for me, but it's getting a little better every day.

Peace.

I'm SOsorry Hep. I've been through it with several of my animals, and it's one of the hardest things ever. Just know that you did the right thing at the right time - I hope you find some peace in that. It does get easier every day, so hang in there. (((HEP)))

I went to visit my dad, and Shaney pretty much stopped eating altogether. My h was flipping out so I came home early, and thought that Saturday we'd have to put her down - she hadn't eaten in three days and was very weak. Well, she started eating when I came home, and has built up a little energy again. But she's so old, and I'm just preparing myself - I know it's only a matter of time. She's okay for today, so we'll still be taking it one day at a time.

Hey there Mr. Paws :o)

I'm all ears...

I'm okay. Just really really busy. Not a lot of time for myself these days - so I've been tired lately. My dog is old and not doing so well, but I'm taking it day to day with her. She has some good days and some bad. It's a lot of work taking care of her, plus a full time job, plus a lot of free lance jobs on the side. There's just not enough time in the day! But things are fine, considering all of the above stuff. I got to go home and see some friends this T-Day, and had dinner with my family. It's always nice to go home where I grew up - away from the city. I always enjoy being around my friends - the people that I grew up with who really know me, you know? I get lonely here in L.A. - it's not that easy to make good, sound friends here. But anyway...

How are you? What's the news? Something good I hope...oh please, oh please. :o)

Shaney!

Well I haven't decided if it is good news or not... It could go both ways so. We'll say its good though!

Glad to hear you are happy and got some time away from the city and the bustle of work. It is, sometimes, the loneliest amongst the most people. I think it is because there is so much to LOOK at that very few people actually get around to the SEEING. Seeing is when we feel we are in the best company. Gar has enjoyed me not having school this week probably more than I have. Cause she gets her girl all day long! I bet your dog loves you so very much. I'm sorry its rough with older dogs. but there is this Osmond's song called "He's not heavy, he's my brother." It talks about the burden of having two deaf brothers growing up. but the burden isn't really heavy, because they love their brothers, its hardly a burden at all. more like a blessing. maybe you can relate.

Ok.
The news. you know that friend, the one that hurt me so bad? you know how we kinda talk a little bit and I forgave her and she apologized? Well she asked me if I wanted to try the whole mentor thing over again. Except this time, she is able to handle her own life and therefore can be of more help to me. She says she has learned some valuable tools that she thinks will help me. She really has changed a lot. I said yes after a week of thinking and praying. But I asked her to define this "mentor" and asked her to promise to be completely honest with me like I will with her. and I asked her if she loved me. Three very important things I think. Especially the last one. If she doesn't love me, how can she be sincere about helping me?

So a step toward feeling better! I hope! HOPE HA HOPE HOPE is good!! So, good. I hope good. I hope its not a repeat or a crutch to me. I don't want to trust her so entirely..... But the only way to heal a heart is to open it all the way. She warned me that I had to really really want to feel better and that if I said yes, I would have to face some ugly monsters. I guess trusting her and facing my past with her will be one of the first monsters I face! whew! wish me luck, and a big stick!

Thanks for the ears! rub your doggie's for me. and kiss her on the head for me too. and smell her paws... odd request but its my favorite smell on earth.. dogggie paws. Simple pleasures! Can you tell me a little about her?

HUG!

Well Paws... you sound very happy to have your friend back in your life. I know that was really hard for you when she ended the relationship. You're right, it's great to have an open heart when you re-enter a situation that could possibly hurt you again. But just remember to remain open minded. It's easy to let our feelings take over sometimes, but I think that if you really focus on the work at hand, you can make this a really positive experience for the both of you. It sounds like you had a really open and honest conversation with her - which is a good start. Now see where this takes you. You'll never grow unless you take some risks. This risk seems like a good one. Let me know how it goes.

My old dog is a lot of work, but she's always been worth it. She's been my loyal companion for over 15 years now. Some people don't even have children that old! She was a lot of work when I picked her up from the humane society too. She had been abused and so she was impossible to place. She had been at the kennel for a year. She was so timid that no one wanted her. I would go to see her, and she would just stand in the back of the kennel and bark at me. So I took her home.

I spent a lot of time with her just putting her in my lap and petting her. She would cower as she walked up to me and sit at my feet with her head down. I would pick her chin up and have her look me right in the eyes as I told her how special she was.

It took her a few years to get over her shyness. But there was a very smart girl behind all of her timid ways. She's a thinker and has used that border collie brain to her advantage all her life. Even now, when she's too old to back any of that attitude up! I love her though, more than any other dog I've ever had. She's seen me through my college years, a bad marriage, dumb boyfriends, and relocating to new towns. We've had lots of adventures, and she's been a part of them all. Now, I'm happily married and live in a nice house with a back yard - something I always promised her when we lived in small apartments. She's led a good life, and has definitely made mine better. I wish she could last forever.

Her name is Shaney. She's black and white and has a perfectly round black patch over her left eye. Her fur is as soft as velvet and her feet are furry like one of those bante chickens. Now that she's in her golden years, her teeth are bad, she has cataracts, artheritis that makes it hard for her to get up and down, and a big lump on her side. But she's still very pretty, and she knows it. We love her.

Anyway, that's the very short version about Shaney. She has quite a history :o).

Good luck Paws - let me know how you're doing.

Love and hugs - Shaney's mom

I loved hearing more about (((4-legged Shaney))). Please give her a pat in her favourite place, from her friend kroika.

I think I really do have to get a border collie.

Yep Kroiks - you absolutely MUST get a border collie. Shaney is a cross between a border collie and springer spaniel, so she doesn't have that constant drive to play until she drops dead. My last dog was a full border collie. He had to be doing something at all times, which was fine because I had the room and the energy for him - but Shaney has a more calm side to her. She's got the headiness of a border collie and the lounginess of a springer spaniel. It's a great cross.

Paws - I used to live in a great town, where I could let Shaney out to run the streets after about 10:30, when the traffic died down. I would hear stories from other people who saw her running with other dogs down neighborhood streets, or at the camp ground bumming food from people. When she came home at about 2:30am, she would bark a quiet little bark at the front steps for me to let her in. I wish I had thought to put a doggie-cam on her so I could have seen all that she had gotten into during her nightly outings. One night a neighbor came over and asked me if I could keep Shaney in at night, because she would drop by their house every night at about 11:30 and bark until they let their dog out to see her. Then they would run off and do their business together. I'm assuming that they went and tortured other people until they let their dogs out too. I kept her in for a few nights, but she was miserable, so I let her out again and watched her until she passed that neighbor's house who complained. The next morning the neighbor came over again and said that during the night he heard Shaney barking like mad in their garage. He kept yelling out his window for her to be quiet but she wouldn't quit. He finally went out to the garage, and found that Shaney had a burglar cornered at the back of the garage! My neighbor called the police and they arrested the guy. After that, the neighbor said that Shaney could come over anytime she wanted :o).

Hey I wanted to tell everyone about this diva dog I have. Spoilt rotten!! last night I made them their supper. I do this at least once a week. Rice, wheat germ, garlic, and some left over black eye peas and ham. They had a great meal.

I filled a pan to walk over to the neighbors Great Dane and when I got back, Penny the glam gurrrl, did not greet me at the door, a prancin and a dancin. I tiptoed in the bedroom, and saw her lying on my bed with her nose buried in a bag of Cheetos that she must have snatched when I was out of the house. I screamed "whatcha doin!!" and she flew sideways off the bed with the bag still on her face. That's the funniest s**t I have seen in a long time.
