Being a self-professed 'wordie', as first I didn't get what Xtain meant until I read more threads.

I did a bit of research on the web and found a site called: "Urban Dictionary" and under the term xtain, found no less than 10 different definitions/variations of the word:

http://www.urbandictionary.com.....term=xtian

What's even more interesting is that threre is a poll in which folks can give a thumbs up or down as to any particular definition.

Interesting.

What occured to me is maybe the "x" part of it. You know, in grading papers - an x = wrong and a check mark = right. Possibility?

Would it have the same emotional charge if say, Ytain or Ztain or even Ctain?

Evidently google converts it to mean christian as you can google 'buy xtain merchandise' and it makes over 28 million hits.

Anyway, just thought I would throw in my 2 cents here......

Thank you Bitsy and Marypoppins. I know I said I was just going to read but I hate to not respond to somone. I'm sorta in a hurry today cos i have lots of work to get caught up on after the holidays. yuck. I havent decided what to do yet about my church. It's my home. there are so many nice people there. people that I grew up with and love. ive watched families grow up there and one of my friends even named her baby after me. the baby's 5 now and God blessed me giving me the oportunity to watch this beautiful child grow up. But there are some people that have slowly taken over the church and are trying to control what is preached and what is said in the church. Even outside it. They are trying to dictate and preach what is sin and what isnt' n thats not their place. Thats' between the individaul and God.They listen to gossip and confront members of the congregation. Like no one asks, but they think its ok to front people like that. They trry to control how we talk. Some of these people hold office in the church n use positions of authority to try to dictate, intimidate. People that have no room to talk, in my opinion. It hurts me to see people leave but I understrand there reasons. its too hard to worship and serve as a community when there is all that drama and chaos being created by a few people. Ive prayed and prayed about it but nothing is changing n i dont' know how to pray about it any more. as the congregation gets smaller, these few people get worse. more overbearing and controlling. sorry to go on so long. thanks again.

TBT thanks for that link. I read Taz's post ...Peace of Christ... and looked around. I read that X is not necessarily a way for non-Christians to X Christ out of Christmas. instead its a traditiom in Christianity. its' an ancient symbol for Christ. It comes from Greek. X in Greek means Chi the first letter in Christ and might have been used as His initial. So, TBT you were right- it's really CMas!!! We just didnt know that. i thought it was some kinda shorthamd or abreviatoin. . I guess offense is where we decide to take it weather it was intended or not

There's probably no God.

This is not an absolute statement. I see it as a comment that rejects the hellfire, prophetic type religious movements. The ones that use shame, threats of "Hellfire and Damnation", and stringent rules to govern sexual activity, to margianalize and insult non-believers.

Stronginhim, i wanted to say this to you. This may be offensive to you, i have no way of knowing so here goes. I thought the things you said to no one in particular and in particular to Craigco were offensive. When you said "You are either very young or very thoughtless...or both." Craigco seems to be a very thoughtful person to me. He has obviously studied more then Xtian literature n given it a lot of thought. His writing is VERY thoughtful.

Anf this!! "Just as a generic post (to no one poster in particular)...referring to Christians (or Christianity in general) as "xtians" or "xtianity" is as hurtful and insulting as calling African-Americans "niggers." - TO YOU. I don't take offense to it, except 2 the way you flung out that word, a racial slur to compare to the use of X to replace the word CHRIST. No one called Xtians that horrible name. where on earth did that come from?

"Replacing the name of Christ with an "x" is discourteous and hurtful to Christians." See, this is what bothers me. i mean NO offemse to you but maybe you think you have the right to speak for all of Christianity but I am a Christian and and it doesn't bother me at all. Why do you think you can speak for all of us? That is hurtful to me because what you believe is not what everyone believes. When you call people names and throw unrelated stuff into a comversation you give us all bad names. In my opinion.

and i'm sure you respect your mother. but people are raised differently. Just because she raised you a certain way.... maybe what she taught you works for you... doesnt mean that what your mother taught you was right. did she teach you to belittle people that dont have the same beliefs? Did she teach you to try to control what others say? That if they dont believe what you believe they are bad mannered? you called Craigco young and thoughtless for sayimg his opinion. a gentle way of calling him a name, shaming him for not havbing YOUR kind of manners. which i find questionable.

On the 5-Jan-10, to andii, you wrote:

"When someone intentionally insults another because they didn't like a "certain word" they used, wouldn't the appropriate response be "I'm sorry" as well?? Funny how none of the self proclaimed Xtians want to address that, huh? That's expected though."

I have been mulling over this "expectation" that seems to predominate in our society that we should apologise whenever we offend someone in some way.

What if I don't feel sorry?? Am I expected to forego my desire to be authentic just to pander to someone's expectations in order to 'fit in well' in society? I think that an authentic response would be that the 'offense' was not intended, together with the caveat that the cause of the offence lies within the mind of the offended not in the words of the so-called 'offender'. Words are only symbols, mere labels - just the 'neutral' stimuli. It is our own mind's interpretations of these 'place holders' for the real thing that do the offending, IMHO.

I remember that old truism: "Sticks and stones can break my bones - but names can never hurt me" - unless, of course, I let my mind run amock firing off the neurons in my amygdala by imagining some illusory threat to my delicate ego.

In my opinion, and that's all it is, I don't think you wrote anything that warrants an apology. I hope that you had a great night's sleep bro and are in top form now.

The Wrath of God will come down if He is opposed!

Must I list all the biblical passages that outline ways to punish non believers? ;0)

The "God" of the Bible teaches his subjects well for they will use similar tactics today( albeit within modern and less brutal context) when a non-beleiver opposes them.

BTW Benny Hinn is a total FAKE! But there's plenty of people missing a frontal lobe to feed his ego and pocketbook.

Lillabit: Thank you for saying what I've been thinking. Ma, I didn't want you to think I was picking on you but what the heck was that? A minister telling someone they are "very young, or thoughtless, ot both" because they did something that you found offensive, and then later said something about his manners and upbringing? I think those statements are offensive in themeselves no matter who you are talking to as you are being judgmental and down talking him. I've been waiting for you to come back and address that since there has been opposing "proof" re: the X usage. I don't think name calling proves your point one little bit.

C'mon, Ma. You've become almost militant lately with some of your posts in telling others what they should or shouldn't do. What say you?

On the 4-Jan-10 you wrote"

"God doesn't exist. He's no different than the Tooth Fairy."

Those statements should be no more inflammatory than:

"God loves us all. God is waiting for us in Heaven."

I wholeheartedly agree. For open minded, mature, thinking people feelings wouldn't erupt in reading either statements.

In my experience, the realization that our feelings are evoked by our own thoughts about events, frees us from blaming others for own own self-created emotional pain. We can then go hunting down deep into the recesses of our own psyche for the flawed thinking that induces our emotions to fire up. Blaming others for our negative feelings only exacerbates our own ignorance of the workings of our own mind, IMHO.

In my own personal opinion.........this post is so out of portion that I cannot relate to any. Yes I was in it to. MY point is why does everyone have to think one person's belief stands for the whole denomination. They is probably something bigger than any of us....call it what you want. But how arrogant to think that one person knows a fucking thing....nothing has ever been proving anyway. Belief : Means strongly suspects in something only. Look it up. HF

Belief is only a strong feeling. Nobody really knows. I just know I am not arrogant to believe I am God and in control of everything.

I once upon a time, believed in love and peace and happiness. I once believe in a happy ending......I once was was loyal to friends. I have my very own thoughts and beliefs now.

Never too much loyalty to anyone as I did ( like a dog) I have to trust my myself. I am not defending a soul here. I believe (suspect} they can do it themselves. horsefly

I just happened to be ignored. Another sign of arrogance.

Of course I know the routine. Been far away. You don't deserve a a response.

Dear CraigCc -

My only need is to guard my heart from pride, unkindness, judgment of others or harboring an argumentative spirit. My remarks to you were wrong and I extend a heartfelt apology for same.

Thank you for reminding this olde lady how far she has to go in character development. [Smile.] But -- like all of us -- I, too, am a "work in progress."

You have helped me remember how important it is to be humble of heart. I sincerely thank you for that.

Blessings to all of you who have (justly) corrected me.

Dear SD -

Over the years I have come to deeply respect even the "tough" words you have given me from time to time. They always contain a vein of deep Truth.

I thank you for your comments and I receive them with a humbled heart.

You are made of good stuph! And I receive your correction with (hopefully) the same open heart with which you offered them.

You know what? I do miss Nappy, though. She really was so wonderfully strong & direct without being offensive. I hope someday to evolve into such an admirable person.

Dear Lillabit -

Bless you for your straightforward posting. I am not offended. All of us need correction from time to time, as the situation warrants it. It is my hope that I never grow so prideful or arrogant that I cannot admit when I am wrong or accept correction, offered in the right spirit.

Thank you for taking the time to help me get back on a better track and also see things from a wider perspective. I don't want to grow olde AND narrowminded. Wrinkles are annoying enough without having a dried up heart and mind, to boot.

And you are quite right: my mother would most certainly NEVER have tolerated hearing her children speak in a belittling or shaming manner to others. Again, I receive your correction. You have made wonderful points in a very clear way. I appreciate you for doing so.

Ma,

Don't want you to feel bad. I do try to exercise a modicum of tact when I post my views or engage in debate with others but unfortunately, one may not always come across that way despite their efforts. I'm ok though so, "no harm - no foul". Your apology wasn't necessary but graciously accepted none-the-less.

Be well!
