As most of you know, I am a disabled widow. The insurance money from my late husband's death has run out. I have been surviving on my disability, plus help from my two sons. This month, my mortgage company raised me $600/month. I have contacted a government-backed company which helps renegotiate mortgages...but they have been unsuccessful in helping me.

Bottom line: I face losing my house now. Nor do I have anyplace to go that I can afford. The rents here for efficiencies and small l-bedroom apts. are beyond the stretch of my fixed income.

Please pray for me. I truly need God's help. My house has been listed for sale for over two years without a single offer, despite lowering the price to "break-even" with the mortgage level. I am in Florida and the housing market here has utterly collapsed.

I thank you for caring.

(((((Ma)))))

I know you have been dealing with this for a long time.

I can't imagine the stress level of worrying about this for so long.

I wish I could offer a solution, I know you've been doing all you can.

I know we've discuessed this before, but have you sold everything you possibly can to make ends meet, at least temporarily? Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Any chance of getting roommates to help pay the mortgage?

If you have to forfeit your house, could you rent a room somewhere to live? I know you can't afford your own apartment, but maybe you could rent a room in someone's house. You have to live somewhere.

You are in my thoughts.

I may not go to church, but I do daily meditate on scripture and do believe in God. I will share a few of the scriptures I hold on to:

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind conceived what God has for those who love Him. 2 Cor 2:9

I know you love Him:)

For I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you, give you a future and a hope, and then you will call to me and seek me and you will find me. Jer 29:11+

I know you seek Him:)

For let us not grow weary in doing good for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Gal 6:9

I hear your weariness...

I will pray for you (and I will do it right now) because I do believe prayer moves mountains, it did in my life:)

The Scriptures, your prayers and your kindness helps so much. I do, indeed, thank you.

SDesigns -

Yup. I have sold everything possible. All that is left is my car (which is paid for), but the lawyer says I cannot legally sell it. It will be taken during the bankruptcy and sold. So, I will not have any transportation, either, and live in an area with virtually NO public transportation.

I don't know if I can find a "room" somewhere. Few people want to live with a minister (SMILE). Cramps their style, if you follow me...

But I will keep hoping.

Thanks and bless all of you for caring.

P.S. We did have roommates, but one moved in with a group of missionaries from his church and the other (the teen we rescued from an abusive home) headed off to college last month. So, it's just my two sons here now. They are paying as much as they can, but we just can't raise enough. Tried renting rooms through two different online sites, but no success.

I am open to any other ideas.

Well, I'm sure you are using Craigslist for the rentals...goodness, the hopelessness all around us now is really, really rampant. I know you've been in this boat for quite some time, now, Ma. I certainly feel your pain.

It doesn't seem to me that you'd cramp anyone's style! You are smart, funny, and always willing to listen and counsel, if counseling is called for. How could that cramp anybody?

All I can tell you is this: For the past year and a half I've been looking for work. My boss told me in June that I would have to hit the bricks on 7/31, if I miracle didn't occur. We were positively bleeding money and she was about bled dry. She's 58 and had run through almost all of her retirement.

I was considering all kinds of things, like giving up my life here in Hawaii and moving home to live with my Mom. Hurt like heck to think of, but what could I do? If I couldn't find a job to pay at LEAST $33,000 a year (peanuts, over here) then, I was sunk.

Then, on July 7th, in walked that miracle. A woman running a vacation timeshare company needed someone to perform weekly briefings at a very well-to-do condo. My company/boss was hired on the spot. We have experienced the most tremendous hike in business I've ever seen. I got my first bonus since 11/07 last week for $350. I'm speechless. And thankful. And a bit more of a believer now, I admit it!

I'm not terribly religious - more of a fatalist. Call it what you like, the past 2 months have been amazing. New life in this company. Now, another great opportunity has come our way. We'll be getting it up and running over the next few months. My boss was in tears over having to lose me. Now, she's re-energized. I think I am too. It was meant to be.

Perhaps you really have to face the very, rockbottom worst, before you can begin to believe that things WILL really improve? After all, you've been the one to make things happen in your life. I don't think you'be had a lot of help in that area.

If it (a wonderful turnaround) can and deserves to happen to anyone, in my own book, that's you.

I'll be sending warm, positive vibes your way, Ma. Let's see if we can turn this around for you, 'K?

H-gal

Wow, Honolulugal...

What a powerful (and encouraging) testimony!! Never give up, right?

Reminds me of that cartoon of the crane, swallowing the frog at the lily pond...the frog is 90% swallowed, but still has one fist tightly clenching the crane by the neck....NEVER GIVE UP.

I shall hold onto my hope...

Bless you...

Ma, would you be able to use your home as some sort of recovery home and get money that way? Something like a sober living home or a battered women's shelter? Seems like you could get state funds or something for that and with you being a minister, it might be possible. I'm sure there's licenses you'd have to get etc, but maybe that would be possible. Just a thought- I'm thinking!!

Hi Ma,

If you get a minute Matt Redman sings a song "Never Let Go" here it is:

I just checked the above-copied and pasted it and it works. If you can, go, close your eyes, listen, and let it sink deep deep into your soul.

He loves you, He loves me, He loves us all:)

My social worker friend is going to make some phone calls on my behalf, to see if I would qualify as an "interim shelter" for battered women and their children.

Thanks again, SD. I will continue to hope for a miracle.

Dear Ma Strong, I would just like to let you know that your circumstances just break my heart. I know that we may have started off wrong once, but you are a very faithful servant of the Lord and I feel very strongly that He will come to your aid. I understand how scarey it is to live with the thought of losing your home, I would just like to let you know that I will add you to my prayer list, and if I may, I would like to give you a quote that has helped me through many tuff times...............
The Will of God will never take you...
Where the Grace of God will not protect you..........................
Blessings being sent your way and may your faith keep you up and still believing in a Miracle..
Love in recovery, Peace

Dear Ma,
I'm sorry to hear about what's happening to you. I will certainly say a prayer for you.

Have you looked into a Reverse Mortgage? I'm not sure if they do this in FL, but it would be worth it to check it out.

Have you checked into a chapter 13 bankrupcy? We had to do that after all my daughter's medical bills and it restructures you mortagage. They take what you still owe and you declare chapter 13 and a new payment plan is worked out wiht a lawyer, the mortgage company and a judge. It has not been easy for us but it helped us a ton and we didn't have our vehicles even touched that way. You might want to really look into that instead of a regular bankrupcy.

I'm so sorry to hear about the mortgage increase. How in the heck do they justify doing that???

If I think of anything else to add to what others have already come up with and to what you have tried, I'll certainly post it.

Please know that I'm thinking of you and praying that you can keep your home somehow or find somewhere decent to live.

Love,

Mary

((((((((((MASTRONG))))))))))

When things go wrong as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low, and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must, but don't you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out, Don't give up though the pace seems slow, You may succeed with another blow. Success is failure turned inside out, The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far, So stick to the fight when you are hardest hit, It's when things seem worse that you must not quit.........

I hope this helps, I know it has helped me many of times.......you are in my thoughts and prayers.....

Ma- I have been going through the same thing.

You can call the loss and litigation department to see if they have any programs for you. Seems like they wont try to negotiate with you until you stop paying your payment for 4 months.

With being disabled you can qualify for HUD low income housing. I believe that they charge rent at the rate of 30% of your income. Please start filling out apps. There is a list of the apartments on their WEB site.

They are allowing people to remain in their homes for a heck of a long time after they quit paying. Then it gives people a chance to save for the next move.

I pray that there will be an answer.

Wow, this response is so touching and encouraging. I thank each and every one of you for your uplifting words and thoughtful suggestions.

Hepburn - I do not qualify for a reverse mortgage because (1) I am only 58 [the minimum age for a RM is 62] and (2) I do not have equity in my home. Because of the current housing market collapse in Florida, California, Michigan, etc., I find holding the mortgage to a house which is now worth nearly $75K less than the mortgage. So many of my friends and neighhbors are in the same boat. These are, indeed, hard times for so many.

Netsirk -

I met with a bankruptcy attorney who advised me that my lack of income (I live at below-poverty level) rules me out of a Chapter 13 and probably a Chapter 11. Chapter 7 seems to be the path which I must walk. In Chapter 7, they take my house and car, as well as cancelling out all my debt. I walk away with (literally) the clothes on my back. They cannot garnish/take my disability (Federal law), so I get to keep that. However, it is not really enough to live on, as I'm sure many people appreciate. I am hoping to avoid filing a BK, but it appears inevitable at this juncture.

Mary -

Thank you for your kind words. Moral support really helps when you are facing such losses and uncertainty. HUGS to you.

Friendma -

I was deeply touched by your posting of "Never Quit." My late husband had a small plaque with this printed on it which he kept on his office desk. I had forgotten it, but your wonderful posting brought it back to remembrance. My husband would be very pleased that you revivied his courage and willingness to endure in such a marvelous way, by posting his favorite poem for me. Thank you!

Destiny -

Although my income and disability qualifies me for Federally subsidized housing, my ownership of this house (despite foreclosure proceedings) disqualifies me. Until the foreclosure procedure is complete (which could take up to two years in my County because they are overwhelmed with a FLOOD of foreclosures), I can't even get on the waiting lists. Frustrating, but that means I must find a way to survive until I qualify to get on the list. Thanks for the suggestion. It is solid, just unattainable at the present.

Ma- You are right your social security cannot be garnished. If you just walk away from your debt isnt it like after 7 years they have to erase it from your record? (Statue of limitations) and your state has only so many years to try to sue you in court even if they did they couldnt take your social security to pay a judgement back. In Florida will the mortgage company allow you to sign the deed over to your home to them in lieu of foreclosure? Like you said if you quit paying you can just bank the money every month and have a nice sum of money to put towards a move.

After you quit paying as time goes on your bank will be more and more willing to modify your loan and try to find a payment plan that you can afford.

Believe me I am going through the same thing you are now. I have applied to rent a place that is 1/3 of what I am paying now water and trash included. So it will save on gas and on money. I hate the idea of giving up the pride of ownership but my will to survive is taking over. With food going up and gas everyone is getting hit so dont feel alone.

Remember be thankful for what you do have which is a guaranteed income and not for what you dont have.

As time goes on and you stay in your house, bills are getting passed to give people like you relief. I think there is a good chance all will be well.
