Has anyone seen "The Phantom of the Opera?"

This was the first movie that I've had time to actually watch thru to the end for a long, long time and found it spell-binding.

The music was awesome, but what really held my attention was the drama played out among Christine, the Phantom and Raoule (I think that is how you spell his name).

The Phantom is a true narcissist...Ladeska's charmer/abuser in action...he weaves his web of deceit around a trusting Christine. He even plays the part of Don Juan on stage.

I had the chills watching as the "healthy", good Raoule professes his love for Christine and faces the full rage of the Phantom narcissist, not even backing down when threatened by death.

Has anyone else seen this, or other movies that have triggered reactions related to our topics here?

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is wonderful. Very funny, lots of action for the guys. Brad Pitt to look at for the gals if he's your eyecandy.

It is more of drama/comedy, but it had in it the deceit, lies, love/hate relationship.

It was truly one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time. And my hubby laughed thru it. That outta count for a whole lot.

I've only seen Phantom on the stage.

I usually only see kids' movies....with my 11 year old daughter. The last two movies we saw were actually pretty good....clean, wholesome, entertaining. "Because of Winn Dixie" (may be out on video soon) - based on the book. Very good, but plan to cry. We also saw, the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants", which is also based on a book. Cute, and has beautiful scenes of Greece. Bring the kleenex for this one too....If you have kids, especially pre-teens, these two are great.

CM, The Phantom as a narcisstic? How I never caught that specifically before. but, that was before I came here and also read up on narcissim.

I have see The Phantom of the Opera twice on stage. Was somewhat leery about seeing in in movie form; you can be disa ppionted you know, after seeing it live perfromance.

MamaC, never thought The Phantom was comical. I thought it was a sad love story. Guess now I will have to see it in the movie format for sure!

Ready, from what you described, perhaps THIS is why, in part, why I related to Christine so well, other than being with the same name? Yep, anxious to see it again now.

Last night I rented "Sideways". Story of 2 men who go away for a week to wine country for a last hurrah before one of them gets married. Relating to this site, story of a deceitful finance (IMHO) and someone to avoid and, of one of the good guys that we tend to overlook. Of two women who play it differently- one falls for the charmer and gets serious wayyyy too soon, gets dumped, lashes out, etc, and the other one plays it a bit cooler, also gets deceived but learns thru the process. Not a heavy movie or one requiring deep thinking but realistic. I say "thumb's up". SD

Thanks, guys, for the suggestions.

I'm gonna look for "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" & "Sideways" at the video store because they sound like good ones to rent.

ready, my 14-year-old daughter and her friends have all passed the "Traveling Pants" book around among themselves, then watched the movie together and loved it.

Sew, I was actually feeling tense as I watched Christine melt under The P's spell, which was broken when she ripped his mask off. (Sound familiar?). Her adoring demeanor turned to hate when she realized what he really was. I want to warn you that this movie may invoke a strong reaction once you realize what is happening.

Tonight I am watching that movie from a few years ago "Hope Floats" where Sandra Bullock's husband cheats on her and it is revealed on a talk show. I heard such great things about this show and so far I am completely mystified as to why.

If she hooks up with Harry Connick, Jr. I will truly feel justified in my opinion that Hollywood is the greatest enabler of the codependent culture of all.

God forbid any movie ends on the note that relationships suck. Prince Charming is always waiting in the wings isn't he?

MamaC,

I just found out that I misread your movie review as one other than Phantom...whoops, you did see a comedy! This Phantom thing has begun to wave it's spell around me already.

CM,

I had this written out and pasted it onto a new thread instead. Think I will name it...Reality beyond the fog. I just do not think my reply to you was befitting on this thread.

I watched a video of "Kinsey" last night. Didn't think it was that great plus a bit too graphic for my taste. Afterall we know what the subjuect was, did they really have to show it? Not worth it in my opinion. Going to watch "Ray" tonight. That HAS to be good- saw him in concert at the Hollywood Bowl a few summers back. Can't wait. SD
