all, and anybody recommend a book of poetry? I'm looking for a "sampler", something that contains a lot of the poems that "everybody" knows. And authors from different times.

Why do I ask? Well, everytime somebody quotes english poetry at me I'm very pleased. But as my knowledge of the english language comes from school, work, holydays in the UK and reading a lot of scientific texts, and fiction - until now I missed out poetry. Any ideas where to start?

SC, thanx.
I already tried amazon.com and ordered something from there. Lokal bookshops and libraries were no great help. And my scottish and english aquaintancies could name favorite authours but not a favorite anthology.

I find other peoples favorite books always very interesting. Not only because these are usually really good books, but because they also can put a different perspective on how I see the other and my relation to them.

Eve,

One of the best books on poetry is the "Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry", second edition. Edited by Richard Ellmann and Robert O'Clair. The book contains the classics as well as recent poets. It also gives a brief overview of the poet at the beginning of hers/his section of poetry. I revert back to this book time and time again...it's one of my favorites!

Thanks, kitten.
I also have some books of poetry that are well loved and quite dog-eared by now.
Do you also realize that we seem to grow out of poems? And find that others that we didn't understand as a teenager become wonderfully clear as we grow older?

Eve,

Well, if you get tired of the same old poems...I'll send you some of mine
They might not be Wordsworth or Keats, or even Plath, but they are honest and direct. A true expression of my soul! Poetry is like music for me. Each word vibrates with a different melody--taking me off to a bridge, crossing into another chorus, a crescendo of emotion and feeling.

Kitten,

yes, I'd like to hear some of your poems. No need to get tired of old poems beforehand. Will you post them here? Or would you like an email adress?

Eve,

Yes, I would like your email address.
I'm a bit shy about my poetry tho'...
I recently gave a great deal of it to my lover(?), most of which was the only copy. Foolish me.

kitten, I'm a little shy about my e-mail adress, it gives my full name and the city I live in.
It site coord agrees, I could mail my email adress to allaboutcounseling, and they could forward it to you?
Isn't it funny how "shy" we both are:)

Eve,

I don't blame you...let me know what to do next. I don't think there is anything wrong with being shy; in today's world I think it refreshing!

The Site coordinator e-mailed me back that he/she (sorry, I really don't know) would pass on my adress to you, if that's ok with you.

And yes, being shy is nothing to be shy about, isn't it? 🙂
