lovesickpuppie posted that question on the other thread >>>if you truly hate something does it mean you love its opposite?< << Nooooo, I don't think so! I think that most often this kind of question tries to create a reality that doesn't really exist - most often there is no clearcut "either this or that". And often when we learn that we want to avoid one extreme - we end up overdoing it, and much later find out that the opposite is just as bad for us, just a different kind of ugly.

humm, well said but in many cases it is true, eg if you love god do you hate the devil?

im trying to think of more examples, but to me it does mean you love its opposite, ahh hers one, what about if you love light, surely you wouldnt like darkness?

im not sure wether hate was the right word, maybe its too strong, maybe it should be like and dislike

Yeah,

your examples are good to show what I meant. If you adhere to a certain kind of Christianity sure, you love God and you hate the Devil. But what if you're not a religious person?

And love for light and hate for dark leave no place for twilight, damage by sunburn and romantic sailing over the ocean in the night.

I just wanted to say: if you are really bothered about hate - or feel that you obsess about love - it might be a good idea to go look outside the frame of thought you're in. I don't mean to say that love and hate are wrong in any way - but they might blind us for the third alternative.

im not actualy religous but i know a few ppl here are so i thought it a good example of god and devil, good point about twilight, i think the best place to be is that state of twilight between love and hate, that way youre balanced without hating or loving anything but liking everything, althought i spose that state would have its downfall, im jus confusing myself with my own quote now !

its got me thinking tho about opposites, like in science every action has an opposite, eg shoot a gun one way and the gun will recoil back in the opposite directiong, maybe its the same with emotions, if we love something we hate something else, i dont know, youve all managed to make me think now !!!!

I thought the opposite of apathy was activity?

I guess dividing our reality into opposites is just an easy way out for our brain - to simplify complex things - like life, people and the world in general. It's often helpful for quick thinking, sometimes beneficial, rarely absolutely necessary.

Who's fault is it when the facts don't stick to the theory?

I looked up apathy on dictionary.com, and this is what I got:

1. Lack of interest or concern, especially regarding matters of general importance or appeal; indifference.

2. Lack of emotion or feeling; impassiveness.

When we love something or someone, and are hurt by it, we often feel hate. But the love is still there on some level. The way to know that you are truly not loving that thing or person any longer is when you feel only indifference, or apathy.

Interesting,

apathy in English doesn't seem to mean the same as Apathie in German 🙂

I've told my husband Gingerleigh,,,Hate is not the opposite of love, apathy is. If you truly don't give a shit, you're in apathy not hate.

He has an old girlfriend. She works where he does. He calls her the "devil." Almost every day, he has something to say about the "devil." How awful her hair looks, etc. Do you think I don't know he isn't in apathy about her? I know he isn't and told him so. Still isn't over her. He vehemently denies this, just as one would be expected to react.

humm, ok ok i have to submit to this power of definitions, apathy is the opposite of love and hate..or so i now understand it but what abnout the opposites of good and evil? and to reach apathy wouldnt we have to feel a certain level of hate untill we step down to the state of apathy?

Apathy. Greek origin. "A" meaning without. "Pathos" meaning feeling.

No it's not a step-wise progression. I feel complete apathy toward, say, the late ex-president regan. Didn't really feel hate or love towards him. Just a dude.

Anyways, if you live in a world where there is black and white, could you buy me a one-way ticket because i'd like to move there. In the world I exist in and perceive, there is no such thing as right or wrong - there are always reasons. A man steals because his family is starving, that kinda thing.

I am big into the rights of incarcerated indivudals since my exhsband is in prison and I've been exposed to the horrible conditions that "criminals" are kept in.

In the yin-yang symbol. which represents balance, there is an element of darkness in light, and an element of lightness in dark - nothing is ever truely one way or the other.

Cici, what is your opinion of my husband's comments about "the devil?"

Do you think he is in apathy toward her? If so, why does he comment often about how "awful" she is or how "bad" she looks. Why would he even notice? Wouldn't she be just a person I used to date, and it ended badly (he got dumped), like Ronald Reagan is just a dude who used to be president?

If you don't mind offering your opinion, I'd like to hear it. It's just baffling to me, and I'd like an objective thought. W

well, he clings to emotions in relation to her. I agree with you, if he was apathetic it would just be like, hey I saw so and so. Or she would barely register on his radar.
