I didn't mean for anyone to go on a rant here, I was just complaining about how they treated ME at MY HOME at MY GARAGE SALE. I don't hate anyone.

I don't think that asking immigrants to speak the language of the country is too much to ask. The US doesn't ask people to "give up" their native tongues. Some of my family members still speak Polish at times in the home. But they all speak English, read it, write it, do commerce in it, work in it.

Maybe I should get upset and start a movement to get exams offered in Polish in our schools too... or maybe that's silly since the money might be better spent to enhance our arts programs or purchase better science and technology equipment or hire better qualified teachers... hmmmm....

If I moved to Germany or to China I certainly wouldn't expect those countries to offer exams to my children tailored in English. If we wanted to live there and become citizens of that country, learning the language is absolutely key to doing so. I lived in Vienna for a few months, and my German was terrible but I did my very best, and usually I'd get a pat on the head and a smile and an answer in nearly flawless English to my poorly structured German query. Sheesh, if people who don't even live here nor have English as their native tongues can speak English to a visitor, is it really too much to ask for people who want to make this their permanent home to learn the language?

Well, now, you know it's us crazy social worker types who do all this weird shit about offering exams in Spanish and stuff like that. I take full responsibility for the nonsense behind a lot of what goes down in this great country of ours. People want to come here for a reason. People of all races, from all kinds of different countries, and not all of them want to come here to be nice to people.

I do see where you're coming from, Gypsy. I understand the frustration. I understand the idea of people taking some responsibility for their behavior and their lives, and getting aclimated to wherever they decide to drop anchor. I'm just saying these things take time, and when someone slips over the border to hit a few yard sales on the way home from dropping off a couple of tons of weed, they probably don't have your best interests at heart.

I'm just a crazed, seething, I-don't-know-what right now. I wish I'd have been more thoughtful when I posted. You have the right to vent.

My apologies...

Arwen
