I have heard of Holosync.

Suspicious and interested in how they intended to extract money from me, I responded on line to their request for questions. I was then bombarded with literature, a demo CD and lots of high pressure selling that involves them trying to get me to part with a few of hundred dollars. No way Hosea!!!

The theory, as I understand it, goes something like this:

When two sinusoidal frequencies are mixed together they produce a sum and a difference frequency. The difference frequency is often called the 'beat' frequency. If the two frequencies are very close together, then the difference or beat frequency is very small. This is true and a scientific fact.

The predominant frequencies in the brain waves at the time of drifting off to sleep is within the range of between 7 – 14 Hz. They are called Alpha Brain Waves. This is also true and a scientific fact.

One author states:

"Alpha brainwaves provide the link between the conscious and subconscious mind. They allow you to be aware of what is happening in your subconscious mind, for example when you’re dreaming or in deep meditation. Without Alpha brain waves, you won’t be able to remember your dreams when you wake up or come out from meditation."

Alpha states are said to be conducive to gaining insights into ourselves and our unconscious mind. In addition these Alpha states are also conducive to learning and taking on board new ideas etc. I believe that this also is true.

Now to Holosync and where I believe some of the unsubstantiated claims are being made. As I see it, the Holosync CDs' primarily do two things which are:

1. They play the same meditation style music stereo phonically into both ears. (Binaural stimulation) However they introduce a 7 - 14 Hertz shift in the frequency of the music in one ear with respect to the other. This results in an Alpha BEAT frequency, together with the other frequencies, being fed to the auditory cortex . The natural Alpha rhythms of the brain are then CLAIMED by Holosync to synchronize with this artificially generated Alpha frequency producing an Alpha brain state!!!! This is an unproven and a dubious claim, I believe. If this were true then subliminal messages on the CD could possibly be readily programmed into the brain and insights such as are had in deep meditation. Hmmmm!!!

They claim that what is attained by Zen Masters over decades can be had within a few weeks. Like whaaaa???

After discarding several reduced price offers, I now have received a letter the outside of the envelope of which has this written in big 'hand writing' font: "Slightly Damaged Holosync Meditation Programs Savagely Reduced in Price" followed by: "Only 23 available - Hurry! Don't miss out!"

The inside letter has now reduced the original offer of $327 down to $77. I doubt that even this is the lowest offer. Each of the many letters that I have received has stepped the price down trying to find my highest buying price. Does this seem like a kosha way to market a genuine product that is truly in great demand????? The last letter contains nonsense like 'we are fast running out and we have limited supplies bs, bs, bs ...'.

In conclusion, I believe that Holosync is a scam! Their 'free' demo CD did nothing for me. Sure, it might make you feel good if you concentrate on meditation music letting go of your worries for a while. But that is all I believe that it will do. This Alpha brain wave synchronicity claim is totally scientifically unproven by any genuine corroborating research that I could find.

You can go along to any Buddhist meditation center for nothing except for a small donation and then only if you choose to give it. If you don't then you will still be welcome. There you will learn the real thing for free!! I had to ask, at the Ch'an(Zen) Buddhist temple that I occasionally visit, how to donate money to them. They don't mind if you come or don't come. They don't bombard you with sales hype in any shape or form.

Remember, a fool and his/her money are soon parted.

Hi Tez

Thank you for your wonderful feedback. This site is fantastic, for very truthful opinions. I am so lucky I found it.

I guess I do not know what to believe, about the whole thing really. Like you I do not like the sales side of them, but I am very inquisitive about the ideas they profess to know about.

Anyhow getting to the point. Meditation. I do it. Difficult. How does one really try to slow the mind down, to let go of worries, etc. When I meditate it takes me about an hour to really focus and slow my mind down. Is this how it is meant to be???

Meditation gets easier with practice. It isn't like riding a bike, it's more like working a muscle. If you stop using the muscle , the muscle gets weaker and you have to build it up again.

The fact that you can concentrate for an hour is great! Just keep doing it, you will gain control as you go along.

When I was meditating regularly, I was so much happier, calmer, a better parent, just so much more the person I wanted to be. Now I am trying to get back into it after a lapse.

Pranayama is helpful, especially the humming bee breath and alternate nostril breathing.
