How to get rid of weeds without chemicals? I do not want to use a chemical...how does on get weeds...tall ones to stay down? I want to plant grass down there but there are way too many trees and not much sun...my lower deck is built into an hillside that overlooks this property...I want the trees to remain...I love trees...I am thinking of an hillside pond with frogs maybe? I am kinda of new at this!

Bfg,

I am so glad you did not go. I would have missed you!

I will admit, I do not have any kind of a green thumb. I like to go to parks and hike on trails, etc., to be with nature, but I have never been one for gardening. I tried it a couple of times, but I just can't seem to get the hang of it.

I even got the book "gardening for dummies" and it didn't help me much when I actually tried to do it. I guess I am too much of a dummy for the book to help! Ha Ha I have to laugh at myself sometimes! 🙂

I went out a little while ago to turn on the sprinklers for the yard. There is tons of weeds out there. Like a jungle, but I don't touch them. My Dad told me just to water while he is gone, so that is what I am doing.

It sounds terrible, I know. But I figure, I already have a hard enough time to keep up with the inside of the house, I'd never get anything done if I had to go to the outside, too!!

I also have those problems too china but I am pretty much left to do it myself or let it go...cause of money issues...I think a lot of it is trail and error...I also love to hike and bike when we can...
I just love to be outside as much as possible...its an mood inducer for me, helps me feel gratitude for things...like today while I was looking at my rose bushes...they are so vibrant and red and I thought...gosh I am so grateful for my eyes..that I can see their beauty so well...

Helps me stay grateful and apprecitive...thanks for posting...hope to see you around...bfg

BFG- I like the name of your thread. I have been working for days and hours on end doing art work for a web site I am designing for my son. I drew a fish, made it swim (it is sooo adorable), now I am thinking about drawing a pond.

My garden is a marigold plant that I started from scratch in a big pot that is outside and doing well. My blackberry tree fruit is all over the place.

You asked about weeds. I have no idea. I live in the desert and the desert conservation folks, say leave it all the way it is for natures sake. I have no yard work. Just Joshua Trees, Yucca, Creosote, cholla, coyotes, jack rabbits, quail, cotton tails, desert tortoise and Green Mojave Rattlesnakes.

Oh my fountain took a bad turn. Now I've emptied it and taken out all the sand. It was beach sand. I thought that was cool. But underneath the surface it was all stinky and sludgy. I wonder if that is what was killing things. Tadpoles started dying. I now have them in fishbowls in the house. Hopefully I'll get this figured out before they turn to frogs lol. That could be an adventure. The minnows even started dying and I read that they're essentially kill proof. Not in my care!

ugh

(((Andii))) thanks...I am beginning to see who my real friends are here and I glad ur one of them...when your down and unpopular...you find out quickly stand by you...

It saddens me cause me and msg had made our peace with cary and its over with but people are still on the other side demonizing me...I was impressed however someone who I thought disliked me did not want to continue the shit as they call it over there on his thread...that took a lot of class on his part...

He could of demonized me like the rest of the good christians but he didn't...wow.
Anyhow...sadly I have to go...I am sorry bout your pond:( and the fact I feel I am letting you down and the few around who still talk to me...
But this site just saddens me and its not helping me heal...its making things worse...I am tired of going to threads and hearing what a horrible person I am:(
I am just done....its painful to see so many gang up and hang me at the stake here...
I got upset...I was crying and not doing well...so I lashed out and was told that I was the most vile person ever to come here by sdgns...she really ripped my heart out and so many are helping her or standing on the sidelines cherring her on...
I can't come here anymore...I am going back into theraphy and my meds now...its gotten that bad...
I don't know what else to do...but I send out love to all...what is left for me to give and I do apoloize for the shit here...again...sorry all...

andii- Sorry about your pond. I am picturing baby frogs hopping inside your house. I really think fish and ponds take some specialized know how. I have never been able to figure it out.

BFG- I do not think that you should leave this place because of anyone. If someone is unkind to you just ignore them because you have no control over them and say what you need to say and do what you need to do.

((BFG)) I just need some time.

I haven't been unkind. I just need to be given space for now in certain areas.

I can't be everywhere and frankly I am VERY overwhelmed. Right now.

I'm going to be working for the rest of the week and won't be around the computer at all.

Don't take it personal.

It makes me sad what happened but I ain't gonna let it drag me down or fill up too much space. Yea Caraway has a lot of class, and admits his part. Bravo! It makes me smile.

U need to do the same and focus on making yourself well and happy. Focus on the good, CREATE IT, like in this thread title, and on those who are there for you when they are, and let the rest go.

Be well!

Bfg,

I am sorry that you decided that you need to go. You will be missed by me and others.

I didn't read those threads where you said that others were saying you are a horrible person. I don't believe that. I have seen how you have tried to reach out to others and tried to help and encourage them. I am one.

You have a big heart, and I know you said that you hurt easily, but that is ok. It shows you care.

I hope that you will reconsider and come back. If not, I do wish you well on your journey of healing. Do what you need to do to take care of youself and to be happy. If it's therapy or meds, whatever it takes.

Best wishes to you, and I hope to hear from you again, my friend.

{{Many hugs to Bfg!}}

Hi BFG,

I'm sorry you had to go through that. It's a tough lesson. BUT everyone apologized. It was forgiven. The End. And that's how it should be.

Try not to worry about what happened. There were problems waaaay before you came here. If it's any consolation, sd and I have been having it out for over a year. We rarely post to each other. And if we do it's generally to bash each other. If you decide to stick around, you'll see what dynamics certain people have with each other. It's just the nature of the beast.

Yes, you have some issues. DON'T WE ALL! lol Not everyone is insensitive here. And not everyone is going to treat you with a velvet glove either. But it's that way in life too. Yes? Try and remember that we all have issues too. That's why WE are here. Sometimes I feel like it's the blind leading the blind!

I hope you'll decide to stay. But whatever you decide to do, all the best to you.

Love,

Hep

I love the intention of this thread!!! Gardens and Ponds are some of my most favorite things in the world and prior to getting sucked into cyber space something that I was nearly obsessed with.

I'm just moving back into my house and hope to get the gardens back in shape and reinstall the pond that has been neglected for several years now.

Andii I can totally relate to having your normally outdoor critters come inside because of a mishap etc.

Was the beach sand from a salt water or fresh water beach? How large is it? Don't feel bad about the minnows, it just means that one or more of the critters or chemicals hasn't shown up to the party yet. Or that there is too much of a chemical or critter that is crashing the party. Once everything gets balanced, the pond will do great. It has nothing to do with you personally and everything to do with the right guests haven't shown up at your pond party yet.

Weeds are just plants that you don't want growing where they are. There are several plants I grow in my garden that most consider weeds, I like them because they attract certain butterflies or beetles that I like to have around.

Until I moved to Texas I never used herbicide. I always was able to control weeds by pulling them or planting desirable plants that would outcompete them as well as covering the ground with mulch, cardboard, newspaper, old stripes of vinyl or carpet flooring, boards or other bits of trash that would starve them out. But all that depends on what is around and what you and your neighboors will tolerate.

A method that worked very well in moister areas, such as South Carolina, was to pull all the weeds in a bed so only the desirable plants remained. Then place layers of cardboard and/or newspaper on the ground and keep wetting with a hose to prevent the wind from making a huge mess, then cover with a thick layer of mulch. The paper and cardboard would breakdown into mulch and need to be replaced, but it would help keep the weeds down for quite a while.

Where I am now I use lots of Round-up because the guinea grass is just that invasive and horrid. I don't know any other way to keep it somewhat under control and even with Round up it takes over in a matter of months if I don't stay on top of it. If anyone has any suggestions I'm open to them.

I tell ya, I'm getting obsessed with this pond thing! The sand I got from the dunes at the beach, so I guess it was salt. But I thought salt was good for freshwater fish as many times at pet stores I see little bowls of salt in the tanks.

I'm determined to get this right and have a cool fountain/pond on my porch 🙂

Hope you're having a happy day BF girl

You too andii...I am sorry about your pond...you seem so passionate about it and from what you said...its been a long project for you?
I have an hillside that has a deck designed into it...I am thinking of trying to install a water fall down around it....I am thinking of going to home depot and seeing if this is possible and how much it would cost...since money is scarce...I would be doing it myself..but am fine with that:)
How are you doing andii?

A hillside with a waterfall and pond? BFgirl that would be so awesome! I have a flat yard, no hillside 🙁 I saw this wine barrel fountain pond thing and got it and yes it's become a passion! Or maybe an obsession...I just want to make something that friggin works! I think this comes from work. It's really stressful as I need to create new designs and such and it's tapping my brain. I'm mentally exhausted and beginning to feel overwhelmed. I come home and just want to escape. Went to the gym yesterday and ran and ran and ran on the treadmill, don't usually do that, usually just walk, then I hit weights for almost an hour. Kicked my butt and felt great but now I'm sore of course. And my divorce has come to a stall but once again. That weighs on my mind but is rarely in the forefront due to work. I need to retire lol

thanks for asking BF girl that felt good.

Oh Andii your very welcomed:) I think its very important for us to have a passion in life, I need one actually, and maybe you needed to do that, you needed to burn that energy that was draining you and get it out of your body?
I can imagine how you feel about your divorce, I know that is one of the top stressors in life, along with death...so its good to do that for yourself, to work out, to have your passions, to vent or else it can trap inside of us and cause disease, I am a firm believer in that theory!
We are going to meet my real life friend and her daughter today for lunch and then we are going to the pool! First time this year! YEA!
The pond thing sounds very complex, but worth the trouble I believe, I love fountains, ponds and gardens, and I need to figure something out too, before summer ends!
(((Andii)) have a wonderful day!

Hi all,

Gardening can be like therapy to me. I've always loved Water Lilly's, so I bought this big ol pot a few years ago to use for Water Lilly's. Unfortunately my son decided to use it to rise out the chemicals from his silk screening adventure. When I got home and saw that I was like; "Are you Kidding Me?" So I have yet to plant anything. It's a great pot too.

Before I forget, a friend of mine suggested an all natural weed killer that she swears by. It's called "Burnout ll". The main ingredients are citric acid & clove oil. Very "Green". Here's the web site: fifthseasongardening.com

Happy Gardening!
