I know that Epicurean is the philosophy that is focused on enjoyment, lust, pleasures, and ....

Stoic could be the opposite...!?

Could someone expand and elaborate about these 2 philosophies please?

Thanks in advance! ~RAS~

The 'Eat, drink and be merry' thought about Epicureanism is a modern misconception. Originally Epicureans taught that everything should be done in moderation, and in this way one would find pleasure. (One should not eat or drink too much or too little; one should not be too courageous or too cowardly.) In order for people to be happy, they should form friendships and avoid sex as this interferes with our ability to connect rationally with others without need. It taught that all people were equal and valuable in life. Women, in ancient times, were pretty fond of this philosophy as it taught that they mattered for more than just bearing children.

Stoics believe that God gave you your lot in life, and you should accept that lot, and do the best you can in your God given role. So, if you were born a slave, be the best you can be and do your duties willingly and purposefully, and so on. Stoics also believed that one should not be too passionate about anything - everything should be taken and accepted with stride, emotions were just corruptive.

Hi Stronger Everyday (Amen to us all!),

Thank you so much for the descriptive brief explanation to both philosophies. I hope to hear more from others.

Yeah, I am back, well, every now and again. It's good to be back, but I may be hesitant in responses and stuff, so asking for understanding in advance.

I never really paid that much attention to philosophy and stuff that much. I have read some stuff, but mainly modern, not the ancients.

I always found it interesting that most americans considered epicureans to be gluttons and such. What I always remembered was that they seemed to believe in moderation in all things, but still looked to experience and enjoy all things, both the good and the bad. It seemed to me that they did not appreciate the idea of going to extremes in one way or another. I think that was another school of philosophy (probably short-lived).

Moderation in all things. That's the ticket.

Thank you Gully! That was very sweet of you. I always thought that Epicureans are the fun, pleasure, enjoyment people. Even when I studied philosophy at secondary school, that was what our teacher taught us.

Stoic I think is the opposite. They believed in endurance, pain, suffering and such.

Funny I tried to google this info, but had no luck!

Anyway thank you guys. Gully you made me LOL!!!
