WASHINGTON - Polar bears, sea ice and global warming are taboo subjects, at least in public, for some U.S. scientists attending meetings abroad, environmental groups and a top federal wildlife official said on Thursday.

Environmental activists called this scientific censorship, which they said was in line with the Bush administration's history of muzzling dissent over global climate change.

Wd:

But I thought that freedom of speech was enshrined in your US constitution?

Ahh silly me - wrong again!

So do I.

The American Indians, as I don't understand their beliefs, held great respect for the animals within their territories, only killing out of necessity and then with great respect for the sacrifice made by them.

The Bible by comparison, having enshrined in Genesis, humanity's superiority and mastery over the animal world, has fostered an attitude of disregard for the welfare of the animal kingdom. Only fairly recently is our concern for our own arses compelling us to look much more closely at what we have done and are doing to the earth and our animal cousins.

I remember reading about the ridicule dealt out to Darwin over his publication of 'The Origin of The Species' by the Christian church hierarchy then. They seemed very offended by the concept of us evolving from primates as if we weren't animals ourselves.

It seems that this superior attitude of "we have souls and they don't" justifies whatever we do to them. Religion and it's adherents like Bush, have much to answer for, IMHO.

Since I drive a car and ride a motor cycle, both of which emit poisonous gasses into the atmosphere, I am guilty also.

The difference, I suppose is that I admit my actions. I do not try to cover up, and pretend or deceive others by imposing silence upon them by force of my power or else impose heavy sanctions against them.

I feel sorry for the bears, the scientists and the whole animal kingdom, humans included in that.

I always think of the Bush administration as a kind of alcoholic family administration. Let's not talk about this, let's not deal with the truth, let's not feel the reality of what is happening to our environment and the lives lost and the lives shattered, even if there is a polar bear in the living room, let's not see it, and damn it, I am going to have my way with this war no matter what, I don't care what anyone else says. Anyway else see the similarities here?

Yes its sad, but it is also so disrespectful of human life. Its too bad our president, supposedly an alcoholic, never healed his inner issues and exhibited maturity on a political and global level. We would have had different outcomes right now, for sure in this world.
