I wish I found this 8 years ago. Our kids are being robbed of good educations for many reasons.
Since those reasons don't go away today, many of us have to find an answer that deals with now.
Besides removing a child from school (home schooling or transfer) this is one method to give kids back their power without medication.
It doesn't work for everyone, but it is worth looking at, even for ourselves.

Overcoming Classroom Stress

Children need to feel safe in school because pressure, stress, and fear undermine learning. And when the safety of students in schools must be protected by metal detectors and armed guards, and when students in America’s most elite upper schools report worrisome levels of stress, pressure, and fatigue, it’s safe to conclude that something’s wrong. This distorted picture is made worse by the escalating incidence in both children and adolescents of depression and other stress-related disorders, which have dramatic effects on learning and social development, as well as by similar increases in the incidence of learning and attention disorders.

“The problem is stress,” says William Stixrud, Ph.D., a prominent clinical neuropsychologist in Silver Spring, Maryland, who specializes in work with children and adolescents and who has studied and lectured frequently on the effects of stress on the brain, particularly the developing brain. “The effects of stress are not pretty. Not only does stress interfere with functions such as attention, memory, organization, and integration, but prolonged stress actually kills brain cells and shrinks the brain’s main memory structures. In fact, the top stress researchers in the world report that lifelong stress level is the best predictor of risk for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. In light of this research, I am increasingly struck by how counterproductive it is for students to learn in highly stressful contexts, since stress not only interferes with their learning and retention in the short run but also burns out their brains in the long run.”

Dr. Stixrud says educators have long known that the optimal mind/body state of a student is one of relaxed alertness. The question has been, how does the student get there? The answer, Dr. Stixrud says, is the Transcendental Meditation program. “I have been a big fan of using TM in schools for many years due, in part, to the program’s unparalleled ability to create the experience of relaxed alertness in students—and to create learning environments in which students feel safe to tackle very difficult material and assignments,” he says.

Extensive scientific research confirms Dr. Stixrud’s assessment. Published studies show that the Transcendental Meditation program produces a unique state of “restful alertness”—the practitioner experiences exceptionally deep levels of physiological rest while at the same time remaining highly alert or awake inside. The research shows that this state effectively reduces stress and vulnerability to stress—and protects the developing brain while fostering learning and emotional development.

“This unique state produces very high levels of coherence or orderliness in the functioning of the brain, which results in the experience of increased peacefulness, harmony, mental clarity, and the ability to see things in perspective,” Dr. Stixrud says. “Schools in which students and teachers meditate have been shown to be remarkably calm and positive and to be relatively free of the physical aggression and the more subtle forms of aggression such as teasing and bullying that are currently very serious problems even in our most elite schools.”

Facts About Transcendental Meditation
At the basis of the Consciousness-Based approach to education is the Transcendental Meditation program. Introduced nearly 50 years ago by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the TM technique develops the full potential of human consciousness, unfolding creativity and intelligence and developing the full brain physiology. In addition, the technique produces a unique experience of physiological “restful alertness” that dissolves deep-rooted stress and fatigue, thereby promoting ideal health and behavior. More than 6 million people from all countries, religions, and educational backgrounds have learned the technique, and hundreds of scientific research studies have confirmed the practical benefits of the TM program for mind, body, behavior, and society as a whole (see http://www.tm.org).

What Transcendental Meditation Is and Is Not
Transcendental Meditation is a simple, natural, effortless, easily learned technique practiced silently for 15 to 20 minutes twice a day, sitting comfortably in a chair with the eyes closed. During the practice, the mind settles down, experiencing finer levels of thought, until it transcends the finest level of thought and experiences the source of thought, pure consciousness—the unified field—the source of the unlimited creativity and intelligence expressed in human life and in nature. The TM technique is not a religion or philosophy and does not involve concentration, control of the mind, or change in lifestyle.

Validation: Scientific Research and NIH Grants
During the past 30 years, more than 600 scientific research studies validating the benefits of the Transcendental Meditation technique have been conducted in 33 countries at 210 independent research institutions and universities, including Harvard, Stanford, and UCLA Medical School. These studies, more than 125 published in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals, show that the Transcendental Meditation program provides benefits for mind and body that are highly relevant to improving educational outcomes. The National Institutes of Health has granted over $21 million to researchers studying the effects of the TM technique in reducing high blood pressure and other risk factors for heart disease.

Transcendental Meditation in Education
The Transcendental Meditation program is a powerful and innovative new educational tool for systematically dissolving stress and developing the inner potential of students and teachers. Transcendental Meditation has been successfully implemented in public and private schools and in after-school programs across the U.S. and around the world, with thousands of students enjoying its benefits (see http://www.mum.edu).

I actually love the idea of prayer transendental meditation or even recess. I would like to see the look on those people from the Department of Education when they come into my classroom and instead of reading we are meditating.
right now every minute is programed into my school day. We are told exactly what to teach and exactly how long to do it. of course we were an F school last year so we have no control now over what we teach.

Tiger Trainer.
It is just sad what is happening today. Not only to adults but our kids.
All the programming and expectations aren't improving things at all. Every governemnt change brings change to the curriculum...when i was in grade school it was fine! With Gym, art and the scholastics every day! Why are they cutting?
The real focus is in making us weaker not stronger?

Our leaders are the most ignorant ones to make these decisions, Especially when they get paid off by corps and lobbyists to carry their agendas. They have NO expertise!
Listen to the teachers! The parents!
The kids!

Yeah how strange would that be. ACtually let professional teacher make academic decisons instead of politician? No politicians telling people where to go to school nad how to teach it???????/

I think part of why we are so stressed out today is that we don't get enough exercise in oour large muscles( myself included) and that we don't have enough down time just interacting with other poeple; not working not idely watching tv; just hanging out.

There is a revolution beginning to swell. It is an undercurrent now but I sense things will get worse for everyone (cept the rich)
People are starting to wake up and realize we are being robbed of good lives..GREED, power, and divisive measures?

Tiger Trainer. I agree completely that we are breaking apart and not enjoying human interaction in a community sense.
My son is a great kid but he is failing and skipping English. Since he's been back at school after the holidays I've gotten calls every day about that.
He went to a friends after school yesterday and i got the usual call, 'cept this time it was 3 of his classes (out of 4)
I was watching Dr. Phil because he had a show about troubled teens. What a horrendous show!. The 17 year old obviously had a mother who was out of control. SHE set the tone. AWFULL yelling , put downs, probably trouble was imprinted in his younger years and the parents blamed it all on him! This is typical today, with some kids not getting the love and support they need at home and they are lashing out. How many parents buy their kids love now and use materialism to show love, and cover over wounds inflicted?

I just cried and took stock of my own relationship with my son, and was glad there wasn't such madness in my house.

So I picked up the phone (7 o'clock) and told him I'm coming to pick him up.

I was concerned about his school, and his relationship with his Dad, and he seems quiet lately.
We had a calm talk about focusing on his goals and not letting the outside stuff get to him. I told him I'm proud of him, he's smart, and kind and responsible, and I understand it's hard.
I also told him he has to communicate with me if somethings wrong. Deal with his emotions and problems head on. That I always support him.

We came home and he helped me make Vegetable juice. (I'm concerned about his eating habits since he just got braces and has an expander in his mouth: he has trouble eating hard foods)

It is always work and life has taught many the wrong things when it comes to relationships and family, and what it is to live well.

So many of us let things in that rob us of close loving families.

I'm having my own little revolution and i try to be around people who are aware of how things are.
My son has some very good friends now, stable loving families and it took a while to build this support system.
I just want him, and everyone to get what they deserve out of life. Peace, prosperity and love.

SOA. As long as you keep the home front balanced, loving and strong, that is what counts. But don't give up on changing our leaders and fighting for your rights.
Change is coming and you have an election approaching.

no matter who gets in here, change will not come, I wish it could, I think that only RON PAUL could do that but it will be fixed to get a major two party or should I say really one party candidate in...

I seen DR Phil too and that woman who had such a smug look on her face, she looked typical of most abusive mommies in this world, and she had fake tears and you could tell she was mean too, I felt so bad for her son...all he wanted was someone to listen to him..

I felt his pain, I could also sense her darting eyes on him too, like just wait till we off the air and at home, your gonna get it kind of thing...i seen this all my life, I know who that woman is..not good.
