2/19 Today’s Devotional: Fruit of the Spirit

What are the Fruit of the Spirit?

Fruit of the Spirit are the virtues which grow and develop within the lives of believers…

The fruit is a by-product of Christ’s control in our lives; We can’t develop it just by trying.

Paul mentions nine virtues that comprise the Fruit of the Spirit: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatins 5:22

Today, let’s define and examine the final fruit

Self-Control Proverbs 25:28 Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control. 1Peter 4:7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear-minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. 1Peter 1:13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. Concordance Definition: Restraint exercised over one’s own impulses, desires, or emotions; temperance.

Self-Control 2 Peter 1:1-6 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love: for if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.

According to my concordance, Peter’s works contribute more on the subject of self-control than any other book in the Bible. This is amazing to me because Peter’s character, as recorded in the Gospels, doesn’t always reflect that self-control. For example, when the enemies of Jesus came to apprehend him in the Garden of Gethsemane, it was Peter who cut-off the ear of an accompanying servant.

Peter also said some things that earned him a reprimand or two from Jesus. From what I gather, Pete was something of a hot-head and a big mouth; Oh boy, can I relate! Clearly the scriptures on self-control from 1st and 2nd Peter are things he learned first hand, through the work of the Holy Spirit in his life. When a man like Peter-who was simply a real person, changed by Jesus love- shows the spiritual fruit of self-control developing so maturely in his life (where it clearly didn’t exist before), it makes me take notice.

I’ve heard the Holy Spirit described as a force that sometimes “burdens” a believer do right thing…even when they REALLY, REALLY want to do the wrong thing. I would have to say, from experience, that I agree.

I've still got a few minutes on the clock, (before I pass the torch) so I decided to repost the lyrics from my very first devotional. I had trouble formatting the last half, the first time.

Here Goes...

The room grew still, as she made her way to Jesus, She stumbles through the tears that made her blind

She felt such pain, some spoke in anger, Heard folks whisper "There's no place here for her kind"

Still on she came, through the shame that flushed her face, Until at last she knelt before his feet

And though she spoke no words, everything she said was heard, As she poured her love for the master, from her box of alabaster

And I've come to pour my praise on HIM like oil, From Mary's alabaster box... Don't be angry if I wash his feet with my tears and dry them with my hair

You weren't there the night he found me, You did not feel, what I felt, hen he wrapped his love all aorund me...And you don't know the cost of the oil in my alabaster box

I can't forget the way life used to be, I was a prisoner to the sin that had me bound...And I spent my days, pouring my life without measure, Into a little treasure box I thought I found

Until the day when Jesus came to me,
And filled my soul with the wonder of his touch, So now I'm giving back to HIM all the praise HE's worthy of

I've been forgiven and that's why I love him so much

And I've come to pour my praise on him like oil, From Mary's alabaster box...Don't be angry if I wash his feet with my tears, and I dry them with my hair...my hair

You weren't there, The night Jesus found me, You did not feel what I felt when he wrapped his love all around me, and you don't know the cost of the oil, NO! You don't know the cost of my praise, You don't know the cost, of the oil, in my alabaster box

Good to hear from you. Hope you're doing well. I'm doing okay. I'll be checking the site most days, but won't be posting much for the next few weeks.

I need some assistance. I feel so confused. I have only been married 3 years but separated 2 and a half. I know that i am co-dependent and bi-polar and he is also bipolar. I am on medication. I am so depressed and know that he is toxic for me. He cheats on me yet i want him back. I am trying so hard to break free of him. I am going to attend CODA meetings and hope that i can get into a healthy realtionship or no relationship at all. I feel so lost at this time. I feel so low in my life that i need some guidance.

ok, here are some very small bubbles more like sharing. here is a verse in the bible that i think directly addresses codependency.

Matthew:22; 37-39

37; Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy soul and with all thy mind.
38; This is the FIRST and great commandment.
39; And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

i perciece this as u must love yourself in order to be able to properly love anyone else. Jesus doesn't say love others more than you love yourself does he?

Gup, You haven't killed anything...You're so funny.

Great devotional. Thankyou! And very wise observation.

You know, you have a real point there...

A friend keeps trying to convince me that Christianity is a codependent religion. Thanks for tomorrow's GREAT counter argument.

That's some revelation girl!

Hi MamaC, Hope you are doing well.

Wondering123,

I was a participant on this thread until a week ago, when I needed to devote time to other things. I was checking out the site tonight an dsaw your posts here. I think it's good that you turn to this thread for support. What did Jesus do, if not reach out to those who reached out to him?

I'm going to open a thread for you on the Support side, because I want to reply to you. Please, look for it.

Hi mamac,

I was going to answer you about Kasie, but I see that she already posted you on another thread. I hadn't seen her on this site myself for a while -- I'm glad to know she's okay.

I haven't had much time for posting this last while, but thought I'd do some tonight. It's good to say hi to everybody again.

I'd like to post a few verses from Matthew 20:29-34.

29And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

30And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.

31And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.

32And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?

33They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.

34So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

See what happened? The crowd tried to shut the blind men up, but they kept crying out louder than ever. Then Jesus stopped and they were healed.

God wants to help us, and will, but we have to expend effort to make our desires known, and others might be inconvenienced in the process. So be it -- let's be anxious to forgive others who may inconvenience us. Maybe they need something that we don't know about, and they have to trespass against us in order to fulfill that need.

Y&R,

Hello again. Good to see you're helping keep this thread vibrant. I like your observations.

guppy,

You're really rocking! I enjoyed the verses you posted, and your humor. Good point about only being able to love others if you can love yourself.

mamac and any silent participants,

Welcome!

Everybody,

I posted what I did about the blind men two posts ago for a reason. I saw just tonight that Wondering123 had posted us with an issue that was troubling her deeply. She was crying out for help from us. SHE WAS LIKE THE BLIND MEN LOOKING FOR HEALING.

I don't know if she posted to the support side first, but there are many threads there, and the competition for attention can be fierce. Maybe nobody answered her there and she came here, to this thread, because she figured that Christians would be more likely to answer.

What do you think Jesus would do? Would he be concerned about official protocols being followed or on-going conversations being interrupted [WOULD HE BE LIKE THE CROWD WHO TOLD THE BLIND MEN TO BE QUIET] ... or would he be more concerned with helping somebody who so obviously reached out to him for help?

I think we all know the answer to that. I wanted to remind us all of what's really important.

Thank you Guppy. May I be nosey and ask you .... you said... i have good days and bad. their are days when i am in so much pain myself i cannot deal with anybody elses.... Is this from a physical illness? I have fibromyalgia and I feel so much like you said. Just wondered if yours was from illness also.

Please don't go back to bein quiet. I totally didn't see her post; now how blind is that. I'm sure Seeker was not pointing fingers; not any of them. (lol). I like the bubble quotes and bubble thoughts you send up. 🙂
