I have awful self esteem issues, as I get older it seems they are getting worse. I hate the way I look and have no self confidence at all. Can anyone recommend any books or techniques that could help me with this?

I have some self-esteem issues, as well. Most of it stems from comparing myself to others. I feel like I should be further in my life (especially in regards to career), but I'm not. Do you compare yourself to others? You mentioned that you hated the way that you look, are you comparing yourself to others in this regard as well?

Counseling would do wonders for you.  Also a great way to build your self esteem is to do things you enjoy, as you master them you are more confident.  You should also surround yourself with confident people.

I think our #1 job as parents is to build the confidence in our young children.

I believe this one of the causes of having a low self esteem. We shouldn't compare ourselves to other people. Instead, we should compete with ourselves. We always try to do our best to make an improvement of what we have done in the past.

When we compare ourselves with others, we generally choose those who we perceive as "better" than we are, so of course we come up short in our own estimation. Comparing with others is not a wise choice. I like what someone said above about working toward improving yourself.
