As we watch some very tragic events unfold in high schools and colleges, with kids becoming mass murderers in seconds and then reports come out that no one is surprised, I have to ask what is wrong with the system?  Do counselors lack power to do anything?  Does no one believe them if they issue a concern?  Are we afraid of the backlash from parents or others?

A lot of times I don't think counselors or school officials step in enough.  Most likely these kids are picked on in school so this is how they behave - it's not a good way to behave but it's what they are doing.  I think bullying needs to be stopped in school - less bullying might lead to less danger and tragedies in schools.

Greetings Loretta~

You bring forth an Excellent topic & as a Single Parent of Two~ I remember before my Older One graduated how it was quite tricky when it came to how much Power the Counselors were given. I know where mine attended- the School Board decisions Greatly Impacted types of Intervention within the Schools also Discipline. It *felt* to me as if there was Fear or concern about backlash if the Counselor became too involved with say the Authorities (Law Enforcement) & or if Parent(s) became defensive & difficult to reason with. Some Overprotective re: Child & Child could do no wrong mentality intimidated the School Officials to a certain extent when say Child happened to be the Bully (for example) I worked to make it point to ask my Children (I call them Munchkins)...how their day was & discern if they were hesitant in bringing a problem or situation forward. Some Children I imagine would be fearful to speak up. Worried about repercussions...what the Other Children might think or do...I imagine that would be quite Scary.
I remember when I was in High School when a Fellow Student brought a gun to school... because she was bullied. I personally Believe what You speak of is a grave Concern. There's such High Expectations placed on Students these days from what I Observed compared to when I was in School. The Competitiveness gone overboard & pressure to Excel & become that which the Parent may have wishes to achieve or already achieved. Follow in the Footsteps...Cannot Fail or else...
Also the signs seemed to have been missed in some way- the early signs ex: if Child's Feeling Ignored ... trying to *act out*... excuses: maybe due to Stress perceived or part of Childhood growth.

When I taught- the Parent(s) had Expectations & even at such a Young Age.  It seems the System in some Schools are broken & in need of some serious repair. I remember that saying: If it ain't broke then why fix it...but we are shown in news reports (Whoever watches the news)... how easy it is to overlook what has been happening a lot longer than One would wish to imagine. Painful to witness... I work to be sure & listen to my Children (Munchkins) but watch for signs that again can go easily unnoticed. I'm not the Perfect Parent but I try to be a Loving- very Aware & Active One. Maybe if more Parents become involved in day to day activities of the Child- better acquaint Self with what happens throughout the school day... maybe just maybe...there would be less tragedies or School violence.

Thank You for bringing this up for discussion~ Have a Great Weekend- Blessings...

It has gotten to the point in schools where officials are afraid of doing anything I think. I remember when I went to school we didn't want to get in trouble for the fear of being paddled. They don't do that anymore. I think they are more worried about parents coming back and being mad but really that is how they kept us in line.

Greetings Rhyannon~

Wow...Surprised Great Point brought forth- You reminded me of the time when my Brother was paddled I Believe once... He didn't act up again at
School... Oh No! Parents had to sign Permission slips to Accept this form of Discipline.- Punishment. I Honestly don't remember very Many Children out of line now that I think about it.
Yes- there were several who were sent home but not like we see- hear on the news today...

Thank You for sharing this... Have a Great Week- Blessings~
