I've just read from the Washington Post that there was a shortage of school counselors now.  The Post said that there was one counselor for every 457 students, on the average.  And this was data obtained BEFORE many of the states had their education budgets cut in 2010!

How sad is that!  Cut the budgets and cut the counselors!  My cousin is a guidance counselor and she went from Full time to part time.  The school now has 2 part time counselor's working there.  That is it and it's a school that has K through 12th grade.

I guess we need to train more school counselors or make the job more attractive in terms of compensation.

I think that the the recommended ratio is one counselor for every 250 students. Check this out:

I agree. I think that with all the school shootings happening left and right, school counselors would be able to help that situation. Not only that, it's been found that students in states where there are more aggressive counseling policies have the highest test score gains.

I also think that dealing with this shortage would be most beneficial for students.  Can you imagine having to talk to 250 students during the school year?  What if it's more!

Not all students would just go to you and say they have problems coping, or they suspect that they have mental health issues...

Interestingly, Arizona had one of the highest shortage: 1 counselor for every 743 students! This is where Jared Lee Loughner was from, the one who killed 6 people and wounded another 14 in a shooting spree.
