I think that in order to answer that, you would need to define what rehabilitation counseling is. Rehabilitation counseling helps people with disabilities to achieve their goals. So counselors work with the blind, the deaf, the handicapped and other people with disabilities and help them get the skills and attitude they need to succeed in life.

They also serve as a go-between. They talk to the patient, their friends and family, study their school and medical records. They also talk to other health care professionals. After this, they give the patient the counseling they need.
They also talk to employers to ensure that they are aware of the patient's limitations: what he can do and not do. They negotiate for changes in job responsibilities according to the patient's capabilities.
In short, they help their patients live independently from their community and that includes getting them jobs.

All of these are good answers but you also have to realize there are different types of rehabilitation counselors. Drugs, Alcohol are also problems that some rehab counselors work with so there are specialties that these people work in.
Actually rehabilitation counselors carry the distinction of working with DISABLED people. I don't think they should be confused with drug rehabilitation professionals, unless of course the addict has a debilitating condition that renders him or her disabled.

In the first place its important to chose a good Drug rehab center. Every center has their own programs and effectiveness. It should offer various programs like in house patients programs, out patients programs and short stay programs. There should be trained health professional and doctors who specialise in addiction medicine and understand the patients needs. Thjen the counselling or the medical treatment which ever is needed is given to the patient and thus finally detatching them from the addiction. I myself have been to a in house rehab as was heavily upon coke and now i breathe free and fresh...

Many people talk about rehab councelling but only and petients only know what exactly happens during this session. I have got to know from a reference and sharing with you people. For a better councelling you should go for a better rehab centre like if you are in california you can find many like new horizon, wellminded etc. There are two steps in the programme:
A. Initial assessment:
This consists of 3 x 1hr of interviews, assessment and feedback to the worker, plus two hours of questionairre scoring and report writing.
B. Rehabilitation counselling/ Pain Management programme:This consists of 10x 1 hour sessionsAny additional reports will be provided when requiredc. Liaison (including case conferences)occurs with employers, health service providers, employee representatives and other stakeholders.

What does a rehabilitation counselor do, exactly?
Practically speaking, a rehabilitation counselor typically works a lot more than what his or her professional title indicates. With a thorough understanding of the patients' history of substabce abuse, the counselor starts creating a full-fledged workplan that always stays focused on helping the paients gain recovery as soon as possible without any serious discrepancy.
