My wife's sleeping patterns are very irregular. She often only sleeps a few hours a night, and then about one day a week she'll sleep almost the whole day. Is this a case of my wife having a sleeping disorder?

That would depend on WHY she isn't sleeping. If she has sleep apnea or something that causes her not to sleep well, and then she sleeps a lot because she's too exhausted to wake up, then that would definitely be a sleep disorder. You can't go wrong by having it checked out.

At times the body is very tired, and one does not get sleep..It's natural...best would be to have light meals at night, followed by a warm bath before retiring to bed...having warm milk at bedtime also helps,as the trytophan in milk promotes sleep...
