I have a friend who spells it skitsofrenia; I suppose that's phonetic. My friend has a sister who deals with schizophrenia. She cannot function properly in society, and her daughter is having a hard time adjusting to "normal" life. Medicine helps, some, but not enough. It's a really difficult situation.

Mental health disorders affect the whole family, not just the sufferer. I hate that it's that way but it does. Kids get teased in school if their parents have an obvious problem and people will also avoid the family. It can be heart rending to see the consequences of mental health disorders. I'm not obvious like someone with schizophrenia would be so my kids get a pass.

The thing is people misinterpret people suffering with schizophrenia. These patients are suffering problems that we can't comprehend what they are dealing with. I highly recommend the movie A Beautiful Mind for all people to see so that they will understand how schizophrenia works.

dtypist - I LOVE that movie! It was so profound and a real eye opener.

It is really sad how society in general treats people who are battling something so serious. People with mental illness are often treated like they have an infectious disease and should be quarantined. So sad.

Actually, we can't blame some people who look at people with mental problems as contagious or dangerous because it can affect others as well. There are patients who would hurt other people even though they don't mean it. Still, it is not a reason for us not to understand these patients with mental illness.
