Unfortunately, it seems that autism is on the rise (or at least, diagnoses of it are) among children. Some have noted a link between autism and the mercury in vaccines. Others cite nutritional deficiencies. While no one knows the cause for sure, what is known is that there are now treatments that allow an affected child to live a very similar life to his non-affected counterparts. I know several affected children personally, and the average person on the street would never know they were autistic.

I don't think the vaccine connection is authentic.  Wasn't there a scam about that which was revealed a few weeks ago?  From what I've read about autism, there are still so many unknowns.  Kids seem to react to different stimuli.  I wish we had an answer.

You know I know a few kids that are autistic too and you would not know from looking at them.  I was surprised that they were autistic when I was told.  I don't know what is causing autism more these days.  I don't know if there is an uprise or if more doctors are not just diagnosing kids with it?

The vaccine link cannot be completely discounted. I know a family personally whose daughter was perfectly normal and developing properly until a round of vaccines were given, after which she digressed and was diagnosed autistic. She is not an isolated case. What is not known for sure is whether the vaccines *cause* the autism, or whether they activate a defect that is already present but not causing a problem, or what the link actually is.

My brother has a mild autism. He could understand things but when it comes to studying, he would have a hard time comprehending his lessons. The best thing we can do with people affected by autism is to make their lives as normal as possible. Also I would try to educate other people that autistic people are harmless and they should be thankful that they don't have the illness.

As a parent of a young child, this is such a scary thing. To think that 20 years ago when we thought of autism we thought of Rainman and it being a very rare disorder and now we all know someone who is personally affected. I really wish they could get to the bottom of this and figure out why it's happening so frequently now.

I think the point about vaccines is that it is when certain vaccines are given in combination - it is this that can cause problems. But when administered separately and with an appropriate time lapse the infants are a lot less likely to suffer any permanent reaction.

My personal belief is that the increased amount of vaccines they are making children go through are related to this. If you do a search and see all the things that are included in vaccines and what they do you would be shocked. They are saying they aren't related but I don't believe a word of it.

According to recent research, vaccines have not been found to the be the cause of autism spectrum disorder among children.  Studies indicate that there are several variables that contribute to ASD:  genetics, environment, and the age of the mother.  Hopefully new research will one day be able to pinpoint the causes in a way that leads to prevention.
