As one of several staff who is very vocal
in what we feel is the unjust firing of Jane, I can only tell you that we are doing our jobs and continue to do them well despite the extreme tension at the Free Clinic. The "senior staff" at the Free Clinic are barely
speaking to us and we are waiting for the director to find ways to fire us. Administrative staff including the volunteer
coordinator have apparently been told various stories about Jane's firing. And, there seem to be many different acounts.

So, maybe we all need to sit in a room together and here the various "truths."
What do you think?

Thank you Staff Member, for working at the Free Clinic. It's a job with a high cause, one that Jane felt and lived with you.

I'd like to hear the 'various' truths/rumors because they are probably being used against Jane.

One truth I am seeing, is that information is being hidden, and people are being left in the dark. This sounds very fishy to me. I'd like an investigation from the outside to get to the bottom of this - someone to talk with all parties involved, and find any foul play.

I'm proud to see so many previously silent staff fighting the injustice happening at the Free Clinic. It's nice to hear some new voices join those who usually take a stand. Keep up the Great work!!! If you unite, you will win!

I'm sure many of you have seen the various staff tributes to Jane all around the building...or maybe you havent. It seem that the Administration is so furious over staff placing cards, signs and tributes on Janes door that they continue to take them down. Well, we reached a new low today when red paper hearts with the words "I love you Jane" were removed from many office doors. I've heard its a real sight in the mornings at the Free Clinic. Alison, Tracy and Joshua (the volunteer coordinator formerly known as Syd) can be found prowling the halls removing anything they feel represents or refers to Jane. This includes postit notes that simply contain one-word messages such as: "Justice", "Peace", "Love", "Fairness", "Friendship"... and of course anything that says Jane. Yes, censorship is alive and well at the Free Clinic.

Yes it really is a new low. The Free Clinic does not believe in free speech- particularly when speech is concerned with expressing love for each other. Weird isn't it? Not if you have ever worked on the paid staff at the Free Clinic of Cleveland.

We continue the good fight. Support us in stopping paid staff abuses. Support us in organizing. Times may get tougher but we must come together in unity. Help spread the word if you are friends with a paid staff that organizing is the only way to ensure respect,
dignity and a work place that is free from discrimination and harassment. We are gentle, loving people who want to be treated with respect and want a voice in our destinies.

I've heard from some individuals concerns that Jane Loisdaughters termination was only of importance to her volunteers. This is clearly not the case. The original Emergency Meeting of the Board and Staff was called by a vast representation of the Free Clinic staff. Just to set the record straight, I have reproduced the contents of that memo here.

Re: Termination Jane Loisdaughter

Date: May 10, 2000

It is no secret the Free Clinic has terminated one long-standing employee. There are many unanswered questions and now escalated concerns as to policy, and procedure. These concerns are making for many a stressful work related environment.

Therefore it is requested an emergency meeting of The Free Clinic Board of Directors, and staff to discuss policy, and employment security in reference to lodging complaints. The meeting is requested for friday May 12, 2000 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room.

The undersigned are willing to represent those who are unable or fearful of speaking, or obtaining sound assurance concerning the above issue.

*And the letter was signed by eleven members of the Free Clinic paid staff. I've added departments after the first name of staff since I'm unsure of titles*

Deby A -Mental Health

Mike K -Medical

Lita T -Community Education

Cynthia H -Medical

Nina G -Medical

Elizabeth E -Mental Health

Sheri D -HIV Services

Allen V -Administration

Linda P -Medical

Maggie -Mental Health (?)

Jan B -Medical

Thanks to all of you for supporting staff. I would like to correct a misconception. Many of us have spoken back and stood up against the powers --many of us have talked back and tried to right the injustices that have gone on here for years. We have only recently decided to be more public by going to the press because we did not and do not want to harm the services that the Free Clinic has provided to our patients. Many of us have spoken up in staff meetings and to Marty directly about our concerns often at personal risk without the backing of a large core of volunteers or other staff. Many of us have not had the opportunity to work with or train groups of volunteers and so have virtually stood by ourselves when we saw injustices. This latest injustice was the final straw for some of us on paid staff but Please many of us have NEVER been silent about issues and I know that Jane would be the first to recognize that she has not been the only one who has spoken back to power. Many people now are putting their jobs at risk to speak out about all kinds of injustices including racism, heterosexism , sexism here at the clinic. and we have be ridiculed, punished, and demeaned for doing so by the adminisrators here. We also have been subjected to extreme splitting behaviors on the part of Marty and others that create extraordinary stress in good-hearted people. We often do not know what the truth is. Those of us who have fought for a more reasonable way of dealing with problems have had to fight against some fairly entrenched thinking that has been there for at least the past 10 years and I suspect much longer. So I believe that Jane is but one of many folks that have fought back in many ways. I am glad that Jane has had the opportunity to deal with so many folks that can support her. Let's all keep up the good work!!

Free Clinic Staff and Volunteers:
I feel your pain (as tragically, do the folks you provide services for) I worked for one of your administrators for the most Kafkaesque year of my life before that person assumed duties at your agency. And it is YOUR agency, don't ever forget it.
To quote Frederick Douglas: "Agitate, Agitate, Agitate"
You are all awesome and are true revolutionaries. The stand you're taking reverberates much beyound the Free Clinic. Thank you!

What can we as volunteers do to support the staff, especially Deby, who are valiantly trying to carry on and provide the services to our clients? I personally urge all staff to support unionization. There are so many issues at stake: maintaining a voice in decision making, maintaining program integrity, achieving wage parity, protection from arbitrary or retaliatory actions on the part of administration...the list goes on and on. Please do not be either intimidated or seduced into believing that change will happen without an organized and continuing effort to make it happen.
Courage!

MY DEEP APPRECIATION AND LOVE TO ALL THE STAFF WHO ARE KEEPING UP THE ANTI-DICTATORIAL FIGHT AND STRIVING TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE QUALITY SERVICES TO THE NEEDY WHILE RESOURSES ARE BEING SQUANDERED ON UNION-BUSTING LAWYERS, UNION-BUSTING MEETINGS, EXTRA SECURITY GUARDS WHEN VOLUNTEERS MEET, AND (OF COURSE) EXTRAVAGENTLY PAID ADMINISTRATORS. PLEASE KEEP THE FAITH; WE HAVE TO HOPE THAT BETTER TIMES ARE COMING.

As a former volunteer and staff member at the Clinic, I know well how deceitful the director is, and
how unhelpful the board is.......It has been this way for decades! Hopefuly, with so many clear
violations of civil rights happening publically at the Clinic, there is finally the opportunity for positive
change.......be gentle with one another and stay strong. You are supported by the truth and the light
of good.
