Wow, it seems that things are really coming unglued.. One of the admini folks actually is saying that a blank piece of paper creates a hostile work environment. She ordered it taken off the door of one of the employees. There was nothing written on it. She actually got into a verbal jousting with this employee and wrote a memo to him about it. It seems that now everything is considered to be hostile except the things that really are--like the ED pushing a staff person. The volunteer coordinator is being used as pawn in the administrative wars and he seems to be eating it up. He claims to want to be a "peace-maker" but many of us wonder what is it that he doen't get about Jane's firing. Apparently, he was one of the people that was ripping down signs of love, unity, etc . Wow, see what I mean about mental health at the Free Clinic?

Speaking about mental health--I just heard that Marty has ordered the volunteers not to meet at the Free Clinic on Friday. This means that there needs to be greater numbers at the meeting on Friday and CALL the the news people!!!!

Well, I suggest we meet outside and in front of the clinic. Let's see how much attention we attract then!

Please make sure that we have a permit to demonstrate, so, they cannot arrest us.

Please dont tell me that the Admin is now banning volunteers from meeting at the Free Clinic! Is this really true? Who has heard that we cannot meet at the Free Clinic? Will they call the police and have us all arrested if we decide to meet anyway? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!!!!!!!!!!!

At this point, I would gladly be arrested to protest what is going on at the clinic. I'm also deeply saddened by the Volunteer Coordinator working actively against the efforts of volunteers and staff. You can try to silence the staff but you CANNOT silence the volunteers. You have a duty to the volunteers, listen to us!

I fear this has now gone way beyond Jane's firing. The good thing is the sense of the almighty Marty's sense of obvious insecurity. Isn't that ironic? He is at fault and he can dish it out be he sure can't take it. Fasten your seat belt, Mr. Hiller, we have only just begun to fight!!!

Yes...Marty had Joshua (Sid) call a few of us yesterday, and then he himself called River Smith. Marty did not leave detail in his message, so River wanted to speak with him personally first to clarify.

River called Thursday morning (today), and talked with him about this. River asked, "What's the harm in having volunteers, friends, and maybe a few community members have a meeting"...he didn't have a good answer for that.

But he did say that this meeting is, "Beyond the parameters of what the administration has decided is appropriate".

We'll all still gather The Free Clinic, and may decide to move to another location.

Marty also said that, "Adam Fishman is out of town", and that he'd ask him about having volunteers allowed to have spokesmanship at the next Board Meeting.

HOPEFULLY, we'll know the answer to that soon.

See, we're allowed to BE AT THE MEETING, but not necessarily to SPEAK. It'll be good for everyone to be there, and we will decide on a few of us to be spokespeople if we are allowed to speak.

We need to keep up the heat. We need to stop the total destruction of the Free Cliinic. Twice in the last several weeks, Marty's "armed" guards have been called out. No one called the guards out when a physcial incident occured here that Marty admitted to.
What does he think he is doing? No one has threatened violence. No one other than Marty has been violent. What is Marty so afraid ?That the truth will get out? The secrets are out, finally, More truth telling can only heal a very sick organization. Why is the board so afraid of the truth? WHy is Marty?

The only way to heal is through truth telling--and taking full responsibility for one's own actions. At last there was some mental health at the Free Clinic when the volunteers came forth and spoke the truth to the board. This is the beginning of real healing--not some
forget everything and we must move on phoney baloney. In order to keep the healing moving, we must keep saying the truth to power and to each other. It is hard but worth it. From my humble heart thank you.

The staff is mandated to a year long "communications
training designed to "heal" the organization. This is deemed so important by Marty that he is closing the clinic for the day and evening. It is so tragic that this man is unable to recognize the total fallacy of this stuff at this time. The first work shop is supposed to deal with trust at the clinic and communications. Staff is asked to fill out forms that are anonymous about their attitudes concerning trust. They are also supposed to rate themselves on their contribution to an unhealthy workplace. This is like saying that a battered woman contributes to her perp's violence.

Are Marty, Alison & Joshua also going to rate themselves on these forms?

In the midst of all that is going on, this communication workshop seems like a joke - one priced at about $30,000 by the way. It is so surreal that we are supposed to talk about how we can trust each other- in the midst of all that is going on, plus in the midst of union organizing efforts we would be fools to trust management.

I agree, this workshop is happening at the WORST possible time. (The $30,000 is for a series of workshops that will run every six weeks). I have a problem with a series of "communication workshops" at an organization which has silenced the staff. Now, the management wants to know what we think and feel? Please! They didn't care how how we think or feel when they took our voice away at staff meetings. They didn't care what we thought when they decided to close Safe Space Station. They didn't care enought about our feeling of trust when they removed staff involvement from the Board. They didn't care how we felt when they closed Board meetings from staff, volunteers and the community. They didn't care about Jane when they fired her. They didn't care about Hotline. I wish they cared about us now.... they don't. They are just worried about the fact that we surprized them. Staff and volunteers said enough is enough. Now they are worried that we will jeopardize the funding for the Capital Campaign. Now they are asking us to just move on, focus on the future. What they don't realize is that we are looking to the future. A brighter future for everyone (staff, volunteers, clients, friends) at the Free Clinic. They expect us to give up. They are wrong!

The pressure for a responsive board/administration is not going to go away. So board admin and staff have to figure out how to live together. An outside party who is skilled has the potential to help jumpstart the process. Too bad the communication workshop was imposed on the staff, instead of offered as a possibility!... staff still isn't hearing the message that their voice matters, so how can they be hopeful about the workshops? The alleged cost of these workshops seems quite high-- another reason to engage staff in the process--maybe they would have preferred a less expensive intervention and had the rest of the $30,000 divided into bonuses for everyone! Well I see some opportunities for staff to get creative and find a way to meet their own agenda -- maybe this third party has good hearing and can help the board get the bananas out of their ears...

This series of workshops is simply to teach staff communication skills....maybe in a year (after completing the workshops) we will have the required skills to work on our problems. What a joke!

Yep 30,0000 dollars for series of workshops designed to make us all what???? so at the end of the year marty can keep blaming the staff for the problems at the free clinci? You need to take some responsibility Marty and so far we haven't seen that you have taken any. What are you afraid of Marty? Getting mentally healthy?

Union busting, fear, lies, rumors, new staff, old staff,
old staff were once new staff who wanted to work at a place that serves people; old staff who were once new staff never believed that an organization could care so little about some people when it seems to care so much about other people. Old staff who were once new staff believed all of the things that the new staff believes--things can get better we don't need a union we can work it out we are here to do a job just do the job and everything will be ok--old staff who were once new staff had ideals and beliefs in an organization whose mission is to serve and that this mission would keep us safe in our work place -safe to do our work to serve others. Old staff who were once new staff took many years of abuse, attack, lack of money, disrespect before they couldn't take it any longer. --Old staff who were once new staff want new staff to never have to suffer the way that old staff have suffered -- we have tried hard to make a work place that is kind, growthful, respectful, empowering-we have tried to do this by talking, going to workshops, speaking up to Marty ,--we have tried to do this without going outside of the organization and we have failed. WE HAVE FAILED! and now we must come together in a union. WE MUST NEVER ALLOW A WORK PLACE LIKE THIS TO CONTINUE TO HURT PEOPLE WE MUST STOP CONTROLLING ABUSIVE INTIMIDATING SPLITTING BEHAVIOR The people who have the legal authority to stop this behavior have turned their collective backs on us. They have allowed one person to have uncontrolled and unregulated power. We must help ourselves to stop this person. Old staff and new staff must work together to crreate a new work environment free from the poisons that have been breeding for 30 years.
