Marty & Board declares Anti-Union Position

Yes, Marty and the Board feel that a Union would be harmful to the organizational culture of the Free Clinic (Guess this can be translated as: Marty will not be able to hire people without an official hiring process, Marty will not be able to fire hardworking and dedicated staff without just cause, Marty cannot fire someone for filing a Grievance against him, Marty will not be able to play God with benefits and raises (paying tuition for some staff, healthcare for some families, giving raises & cost of living increases to some while denying others these same benefits), Marty will be required to follow outlined procedures (not just when he feels like it), Marty will be forced to deal with staff concerns in a reasonable period of time, Racism will not be tolerated, Reverse-Racism will not be tolerated, Sexism will not be tolerated, Homophobia will not be tolerated, Violence in the workplace will NOT be tolerated, Threats to staff will not be tolerated, Unsafe and unhealthy conditions will not be tolerated, Administrators will be forced to supervise the individuals they are required to supervise, Patients will be shown the respect they deserve, Volunteers will be treated like the dedicated and hardworking STAFF that they are... I could go on and on. It is time for a change. It's time that the Free Clinic works to improve its unhealthy "culture". Healthcare should not be so very unhealthy!

about 6 years ago the united auto workers donated a van to safe space(now a building for meeting space since OASA closed the moldy basement of the Free Clinic. I wonder what other unions donate to the free clinic? Marty is also now using threats by telling a supervisor that many people will be fired if the union fails. I checked with the NLRB and Marty can tell this to a supervisor but not to an employee. Marty has enough legal knowledge(he's paying enough for it) to play dirty. He knows most of his supervisors support the union and he will use them to "leak" this kind of fear and get away with it. also the same lawyer that he is using to bust the union worked on the racism investigation.

Well, I think we should contact the United Auto Workers and let them know what the Free Clinic Management is doing to the workers. I'm sure that lots of working individuals who donate their hard earned money would not support how the Clinic is treating its paid and volunteer staff.

I contacted my own union (Communication Workers of America)to let them know what's going on and to -hopefully- solicit some support. I have also let those I know at other mental health facilities know what's going on and referred them to this web site. Marty & the Board have only been able to accomplish this much destruction because it was happening behind closed doors. Like any other kind of abuse, their reasons and excuses do not stand up well to the light of day. Get the word out! Our reticence to embarass or harm the FC with adverse publicity has enabled them to take it to the brink of disaster...we need to pull it back! If that means publicity so be it. The have to be seen for what they are!

As a volunteer, I was opposed to the idea of a union at the clinic because I've always felt the staff worked as a team. Since that is not the case, best of luck!

I was a manager in a large corporation for many years, and now am a volunteer at the clinic. As a manager, I doubted there would ever really be a need for a union, and so would have fought one. But now, having volunteered at the clinic and heard and read all that has gone, I see there are times, like now, when a union really is needed. Don't let intimidation back you down - it will only lead to more intimidation. Stick together and push for that union. Every voice counts...stay strong. My heart is with you all.

A union represents its members-there have been abuses within some unions certainly, but I believe that Free Clinic employees, and an auxilliary volunteer organization, will be acive and vocal when it comes to their union, as they have tried to be within the Free Clinic organization. Staff will have a say so in their representation and in what goes on the table for negotiation. This can be a wain-win situation. Perhaps not as far as Marty and his minions are concerned; they have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo; but for the health of the Clinic and staff and the clients, PLEASE support the union.

Yes-until a couple weeks ago Marty still had the jobs with justice poster on his door, which someone adorned with post-it notes bearing Jane's (forbidden) name.

Re-organization proposal (which may never come to pass but...)
that the Free Clinic be "directed" by a revolving committee of 3 who will handle program administration, staffing, etc., that there be a separate director of development who will carry out fundraising to support the mission and programs as set by the staff and committee and that there be staff and volunteer representation at all board and planning meetings.
Hopefully, unionization and reorganization-in the best sense of the word- will enable changes like this to come about.

To marty and the board: Doesnot your conscience and our recent history (the farm workers, the
garment workers, the miners, faculty at schools and universities, etc) know that unions are
necesarry?? Just as with other groups, the staff at the Clinic have organized to unionize because all
attempts at revising Clinic policies over the years have failed....The staff has been without a voice for
years. Having a union is the only acceptable alternative now.........If you the board members and the
administration are anti-union, then you are also anti- human rights! ......... How dare you ignorant and
arrogant board members and executive director behave in such a shameful way as to threaten staff,
deprive them of Freedom of Speech, create a poisonous workplace, and Harm the very people you
should be serving??? What in the world are YOU doing being involved at the Clinic???Look at what you
are doing to the Clinic. You make me sick!!!!!You have made the Clinic sick!!!...........................Who
do you think you are??????? I have been involved with the Clinic for decades and I am disgusted with
your evil, secretive behavior...... You are charged with assisting the Mission of the Clinic, yet you are
so destructive!!........it is time to return to the roots of the Clinic........ It is time to remember
Jeanne's dream and to remember how very honorable the foundation of the Clinic was: how decisions
were made collectively and how the we supported each person in serving the people. We knew that in
order for anyone of us to serve people, we must take care of each other. I grieve for the staff and
volunteers of the Clinic that they are without love and care from the administrators and the board

Staff are now being subject to a double pronged union busting approach where one day we are forced to watch anti union propaganda films and the next we are forced to attend communication workshops where we are told by administrators that it is "more courageous to move forward and heal than to dwell in the past". Of course, their version of moving forward consists of pretending everything is happy and there are no injustices and we should just put on blinders to the way others are treated.

Union Yes! Remember that nothing working people have won over the years has been given to us by the bosses and money people. Whether it is the 40 hour work week, safer working conditions, laws against child labor, minimum pay laws, the right to organize ourselves and unionize, anti-discrimination laws, all had to be gained only after a hard fight. Think about it: which of any of these were just given to working people? People actually died trying to establish these norms of working life in this country and set the standard for the world. Sure, there's exceptions and embarassments, but I am proud to be union and I hope the staff at the Free Clinic joins in this great and proud tradition.
