I'm devestated by my firing and by what it seems to mean about the direction of the free clinic. I'm hugely touched by the calls, letters and these comments I read on this web page. (Dixey took me to the library and showed me how to find this. I've never done this before) I want nothing more than to be back at my job, especially during these terrible times of crisis when good-hearted workers need all the help and support they can get. I miss working with Deby, Beckwoman and the other staff rebels and the real sleeping giant power, the volunteers. I feel the FC is teetering on the edge of an abyss and that it will either completely sell-out or it will return to the practices that made it so special: HONESTY, WORKING TOGETHER IN A COMMON CAUSE TO SERVE OTHERS NOT TO SERVE OUR OWN INDIVIDUAL EGO AND POCKET.I love the FC and its program workers. I'm doing what I can to come back. Strength in numbers. Additional info: I believe very strongly that I was fired both because I would not drop my grievance and because speaking the truth and asking important questions is anathema to Marty and the powers that be (board, associate directors) I was told that to keep my job,(board president said this) I had to never disagree with Marty and his associate directors. I told him I would not be censored and reminded him that the FC was built successfully for almost 30 years in an atmosphere of lively and contentious debate.I still have received nothing in written form explaining why my grievance is over or that it is finished. Neither have I received anything in writing about why I was fired or that I was fired. Thanks Heidi for creating this soapbox. Thanks River for doing what you can to organize the people. Thanks Deby for holding down the fort and helping to lead the fight for justice. Thanks ARV for speaking bluntly and checking with me frequently. Thanks Beckwoman for speaking truth to power and confronting sneaky minions. MY immense gratitude goes out to all of you who have left me with hope, concern, love, and a reason to hang in there.
love JANE

Jane,

You're so welcome. It's been my complete privledge to give back to you.

Yes, hang in there, I'm dug in deep, as are many others. It's going to take a little more than the board saying, "Shew fly" to get rid of us.

All my love & support,

Heidi

I first met Jane a little over a year ago, when I took the Hotline volunteer training. I met a kindred spirit who seemed like she just walked out of a time machine from 1970. The spirit of freedom and helpfulness, concern for one's fellow man and thusly the planet was obvious in Jane. I wish there was a way where we could all just work to help each other, to help those in need, and not worry about petty office politics and power plays by those insecure enough to feel they must rule with an iron fist.

It seems Marty believes being director means no one can disagree with him or his highly paid personal friends in upper management. The exhorbitant salaries paid these administrators are a disgrace when one considers the Medical Clinic is turning patients away who need prescriptions - because there is no money left to buy medicines.

The Free Clinic is embodied best in a free spirit - and was thus best represented by Jane - one of the free-est spirits I have ever met.

Just before I left as a volunteer therapist at the FC I and a number of other volunteers in the psych lounge were "treated" to overhearing what I can only characterize as a vicious verbal attack on Jane Loisdaughter by a male in the hallway outside. Not being familiar with administrative staff at the clinic (other than Deby and Jane) I do not know who this person was, but I was appalled at the unprofessional tone and content.

In my opinion, Jane's professional skills are impeccable. I have been in many psychology courses at the doctoral and post-doctoral level and I would match the quality of the content she gave us in the crisis training with any of them. She was very supportive and helpful throughout the year+ I served as a therapist. I cannot imagine the Free Clinic without her.

I have volunteered at the FC for 18 or 19 years (I've lost track-Jane's the one who keeps track of these things!) and I have seen a lot of changes happen but I NEVER thought things would come to such a pass. The common bond that held everything together, the common cause of health care as a right and not a privilege, seems to have fallen by the wayside. Jane's firing disturbs me greatly on so many levels-concern for my friend, outrage at the unfairness and what appears to be downright illegality of it all, and the disturbing trend away from direct client services toward corporate procedure and levels of management for their own sake. I am torn about how to respond to this-if I give up my hotline shift, the only people who will really be impacted are the lost souls who call the hotline in the middle of the night. I don't think Marty or the board will lose any sleep over them at all. I'm sory i missed the meeting Friday because of health reasons, but I will be at the next one.
