I think i ratted out my team members! feeling guilty.. please help

I am a newbee computer engineer with one plus year experience. I have joined in a new company recently. I am new to professional work environment. My team members are great. We are very friendly to each other.

Because I am doing good in work, i have been promoted as team leader. But this upsetted my team members.

They started to bunk work and become lazy. Work production become less and now i have some pressure from upstairs as i am the new leader.

Thinks going like this, today i suggested my project manager that he may need to install some employee monitoring software in all system. Because i have a doubt that they are not working sincerely. (It is the truth. They are watching youtube and chatting online. I find it difficult to suddenly change from friend to team leader to them. To command them to work and not to waste time)

I have also asked my project manager not to tell this to my team members as this would affect my friendship with them.

But after doing this, i feel very guilty.

Also i am afraid that my project manager will think that i am a rat and it will affect my career.

Please give some advice and tips for being a team leader.

Well I don't think you are a worker who should be a team leader.  You cannot "command" people to do anything, you can only ask them to do their part.  I think if I was in your situation, I would speak with whomever you are working for & ask if you can do more good work independently.  For some people the office enviornment is simply a hindrance & instead of them feeling good about their achievements, they feel as if they have failed professionally. 

I am certain that you have a great deal to offer.  Sometimes when you are a very honest good person, people just abuse your desire to be friendly to manipulate you into doing what is really their own job.

Whenever possible keep information that is not job related to yourself, but if you simply told your boss that you could not manage the workload because you feel you are not effective in delegation, that is not really ratting out anyone, but rather asking for his/her support with your problem.

I think it takes a lot of courage for you to reach out here about a very common problem for some pretty nice & smart people.

Please don't beat yourself up.  Please don't feel that you are not professional & good at your job.  It just may mean that you are not cut out to be a team leader.  Be your own leader.  Find a group of people who treat you with respect & do not abuse your good nature.  Do not give up on yourself.  Whatever education & training you spent time learning to prepare yourself for your job, take it & apply it working with people who are willing to do their share of the work.  If they are not, move on.

You are the team leader of your team, so you have to manage
your team and how you manage it’s only depend upon you. Your project manager
and any seniors not help you that how you manage your team. He can only suggest
you work allocation. And you have to manage the entire thing.  Be brave and believe yourself. “Bravery never
