Do you think that online counseling help people who go through it?

Call me traditional, but I've always thought that in order to get effective and reliable psychological help, you would need to be face to face with your doctor.  But I've heard of people who have done it and they swear by it's efficacy.

I have never tried online counseling so I can't answer for sure.  I do think that for me I would need to be there face to face with the person that was helping me.  Some people are different though, and perhaps it would be beneficial for them.  Others might not be able to get out of the house for the counseling, so I bet online helps out a lot of people.

Online or in person, what a person gets from counseling is what they put into it.  I do think that any exchange of open and honest communication can result in progress and be therapeutic.

It might help to some degree, but I think people are more likely to hide things and put on an act online - something that would be caught more easily in a face-to-face session. Additionally, tone of voice cannot be effectively communicated online, which would be a definite downside.

Keep in mind that online now involves much more than cold emails.  Video chats or video conferencing can be used and other devices.  I know what you mean about face to face but I still think that either way could be beneficial.

I do think that they do help. But it may not be for everybody. For one, I think that you need face to face interaction to help alleviate depression. If it works for you then stick with it... if you don't see any improvements then try another form of counseling.

Remember that there are two types of online counseling. Assessment counseling done online are done via tests and quizzes. They usually cover a very specific area such as anxiety. It helps you know for sure if you're depressed, for example. And then there's online therapy. This may include forums such as this where you have a community you could get advice from.

Online therapy could also be done via email. A person fills out a certain email and his or her questions are answered by a mental health professional.

Or what is called cyber therapy, where the client and the therapist talk to each other via chat and other real-time means.

Wow, I didn't know that. I've always thought that online counseling meant chatting with a therapist. I didn't know forums and discussion groups also constitute a form of online counseling!

I think that this works primarily because people are not afraid to consult professionals about their problems.  If you are scared that someone you know will see you going into your psychiatrist's office, then this one is for you!

Also, I would think that it's much more convenient to seek help online, rather than going to an office where you could encounter stressful things such as finding a parking space, commuting and similar things.

I don't think that privacy is much of an advantage.  for one it's fairly difficult to secure your home computer.  If it gets broken into or hacked, then you would have risked that embarassing information.

I think that online counseling on its own will not work.  I do know that there are a lot of therapists who rely on non-verbal cues to properly assess a patient.  Posturing, body movement, facial expression and even the tone of voice.  How does a therapist know if the patient is lying or not?

For me, the greatest advantage of online counseling is that it is very affordable.  It's like 25% less expensive than traditional face to face therapies.

I don't think that any of these answers the question.  Is online effective?

I would say that whether it works or not depends on the client and the therapists involved.  It's largely a case to case basis.  Some people do think it helped them, while other don't feel the same way.

Unfortunately, there are no studies done on the effectiveness of online counseling... so we just have to rely on empirical data to answer these questions ourselves.

Unless someone who has had online counseling or provides on line counseling answers this question there is no way to know for sure.
