I have been in counseling for a few years now for depression, suicidal ideation and anxiety. The first counselor I had was a psychologist and specialized in talk therapy which did work quite well. Then he left the practice and I went to another group and I have a psychiatric nurse practitioner and she doesn't do much more than medicate me. I'm not sure this is working this well. The medication works, but I'm not satisfied. I can't say I haven't thought of suicide but the urge is pretty much gone except for a fascination with being put under anesthesia which is, to me, a bit like dying since there aren't any dreams. Should I find another therapist or should I just confess my fascination to the PNP?

That happened to me. I found a good therapist, but then she left practice and they played me with a NP who just medicated me. Also, I didn't feel comfortable talking to her, I always felt like she was judging me. I was able to find another doctor, but not a therapist. I have not been to therapy in a long time...but if you can, I think that if you're not comfortable with your PNP, you should somebody else to work with.

Part of recovery is being able to talk to someone, so if you are not in a situation where you can feel comfortable about expressing what you are thinking and feeling, then I think you definitely need to look elsewhere for help.  Maybe there is a counseling group that could help, but simply being medicated rarely solves the core of the problem.

I agree with the other two posters, if you are getting counseling from someone you don't feel comfortable telling everything to then it may be time to look into other therapists. There have been a few therapists I just didn't get anything from before and I had to find other options.

Thank you all. It is really difficult for me to accept change but I am seriously thinking of seeking out another psychologist to talk to. I seem to have more success in holding the more uncomfortable aspects of my mood away if I have someone I can talk to who will lead me to discover why I do things. I'll start looking tomorrow.

I think that you have a choice in how you get help, especially if you're paying for it out of pocket.  If you're not satisfied with your current mental health counselor, then say so.  So that your situation could be corrected in the soonest possible time.

Different counselors have different therapies that they subscribe to.  What's more you can get medication if your situation merits it.  I agree with iPhone4, you should seek out other forms of therapy when you are not satisfied.  It is your health that we're talking about here.

I find it quite odd. Even if your current therapist stops her practice, the replacement would look at your chart and see how you are doing. Since you are reporting progress, I see no reason why they had to change the intervention.

The way it's set up you might have to see 2 diff. people if you are on meds. One for therapy and the other to write an order for meds. Might want to consider finding out if anyone you know can recommend a therapist. You can also call different ones tell them what you need and go with the one who you feel most comfortable with.
