If you have a cold, a cold medicine will be able to kill the virus that you have in your body to stop the cold.  But what about mental health medications?  How do they work??? They can't be killing your brain cells or something?

No it's not that. Mental health medications actually treat the SYMPTOMS not the disorder itself. So you are actually not curing schizophrenia, just the delusions.

That's right, these drugs help you feel better if you have a mental condition, enough for you to function "normally" Say if you are depressed, taking these drugs would help alleviate your mood or put suicidal thoughts out of your head so that you could get out of bed and go to work.

In general, that's how it works.  But medications work differently for different people.  For some, taking the medications for a short time may help them get over their depression, and may not need to take them again.  For others, it becomes a daily habit 🙂

The way these drugs affect you differs also.  It can be affected by your body size, age, illnesses, genetics, diet and lifestyle, and a lot of similar factors.

Some of them suppress certain hormones or affect the synapses in the brain to level things out where they have become imbalanced. Different herbs and foods can interact with some of them due to how they work, so always make sure you check things out with your doctor or pharmacist!
