I found this listing among a set of phobias. It's kind of amusing how often the English language does things like this. For example, why on earth is "abbreviation" such a long word? Laugh

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia – fear of long words.[7] Hippopoto- "big" due to its allusion to the Greek-derived word hippopotamus (though this is derived as hippo- "horse" compounded with potam-os "river", so originally meaning "river horse"; according to the Oxford English, "hippopotamine" has been construed as large since 1847, so this coinage is reasonable); -monstr- is from Latin words meaning "monstrous", -o- is a noun-compounding vowel; -sesquipedali- comes from "sesquipedalian" meaning a long word (literally "a foot and a half long" in Latin), -o- is a noun-compounding vowel, and -phobia means "fear". Note: This was mentioned on the first episode of Brainiac Series Five as one of Tickle's Teasers.

That is so crazy, I had to show it to my teens. Your right there are so many words that if you went by phonetic sounds the spelling would be a lot shorter.

Right! And the phobias are almost as bad, sometimes. Like "aibohphobia: the fear of palindromes" which is, itself, a palindrome. Both of these names for phobias would be horrifying to the one who suffered from that particular phobia!

As if the word isn't funny enough, the definition is also hilarious. I'm sitting here trying to picture someone who is actually afraid of long words. Trying to prounounce that is proving to be pretty amusing too, lol.

Are these actual phobias? The fear of long words is pretty amusing. I know some people that avoid using big words, but it isn't a huge phobia. I wonder what these type of people do or how they speak.

Those are pretty funny! I think words like that are derived from Latin or some such language is why they are so complicated and long. I would like to see some more weird phobias.

I wonder if someone will even try to search this word on Google. I'd rather say it as fear of hippopotamus or hippo phobia than use the whole word.

That was my question.  Is that an actual word or something made up for the TV show that has just spread through the internet.  I was going to google it (Webster hates me right now -- I'm using 'google' as a verb), but I'm too lazy.  LOL

A lot of them are made up for tv or comics, I think. That doesn't make them any less funny, though! A couple of the funniest ones were created by Gary Larson (of The Far Side comic strip).
