I find it difficult finishing essays. I do the research, type up my notes but find it difficult getting to the point where I feel it is good enough to hand in and that it is completed. Have you any thoughts?

Hi Hal,
you're not alone whith this problem. I haven't found a solution to this, but you sound as if you do it just like me.

What helps me sometimes is to try and not to want to have the end result too perfect. If I plan to write up a paper for publication I tend to get stuck. If I just have to summarize my results for somebody else to continue working whith the data I'm fine. The only difference between the two really is what I think is the "goal" of the text I write. If I think it's going to be something "final" I keep trying to get it perfect. So I don't get it down to paper at all.

What I usually do is to try and figure out what the reader would want from what I write. I put this as questions in my mind and try to write down the answers. Sometimes it works.

Good luck!

Evaluate what is "good enough" in your mind. And whose standards are you working from?

Give yourself a time limit and when the time is up...it is good enough.

Do you HAVE to have an"A" on all these essays?

If you are never getting them turned in they become self defeating behaviors.

Perfectionism and hypercompetetiveness....two things that can cause you to feel very unhappy with things as they are and make you set standards that are much too high to reach. Unfortunately, I have that problem too. The only thing I can do is try to remind myself that, as the gypsies say, "perfection is death".
