my boyfriend is very unhappy. he has had down times in our relationship but last night i called him and he was very down. he told me that he doesn't think he cares very much for himself and that scares me. he says that he feels a void in himself but doesn't know what it is. we talked about us as well and he told me he pushs me away because he is afraid of becoming too close to someone. he thinks he will be dissapointed. we talked about his last girlfriend that he was very in love with but ended it because he made himself mentaly and physically exhausted trying to be perfect for her. he ended it because he thought she deserved better. i am afraid that he will do the same with me. but now i wonder if maybe i do. i think he is one of the most wonderful person i have ever met but he tells me he won't love again for a very long time and that hurts. i don't think that he can love someone else until he loves himself and i told him that. i said that i thought it might help to speak to a therapist but he says maybe he will when he breaks again. he is also afraid of being medicated his whole life. he has a.d.d and takes ridalin but not on a regular basis. i just don't know what to do. i care very much for him and i am very worried.

Worry is a waste of time, and energy. You did not say how old you are, or how long you have been in this relationship, but from what you said, I would cut it loose. You are absolutely correct , he can't love if he doesn't love himself, and life is to short to rescue, heal the sick, and pour your self into a bad investment of self. If he said he can't love for a while, that is a clue, all the negative self talk, all the victim speech, all the signs of a waste of time. I say, move on girl, don't be co-dependent, don't be a victim your self, heed the warning signs, and run.
