Behavioral Health

CARFThe Free Clinic’s Behavioral Health Department includes mental health care and substance abuse treatment. The Free Clinic has been accredited by CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, for the following programs: intensive and non-intensive outpatient drug and alcohol treatment and adult mental health services.

Mental Health Services
The Mental Health department provides outpatient counseling and psychiatry services to patients. The Free Clinic offers numerous treatment options including individual, family and relationship counseling, and psychiatric services for mild to moderate conditions. More severe conditions are addressed on a case-by-case basis, and referrals are offered as needed.

An initial intake appointment is required for all services. Our program serves adults and older adolescents ages 18 and older.

Note: Access to our medication services are available only to clients seen by our psychiatry team. Access to psychiatry services can take as long as 30 days or longer. Only The Free Clinic scripts can be honored by our pharmacy.

Substance Abuse Treatment Services
The Substance Abuse Treatment Program is currently funded by the ADAMHS Board and accepts adults from Cuyahoga County for treatment. Services are accessed by appointment only. The intake process for our SAT program ranges from 2 to 3 hours and must be completed before admission to the program. The following services are offered for men and women.

Evening Services:

Intensive Outpatient Treatment: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday – 3 hours – 6:00 to 9:00pm
Non-Intensive Outpatient Treatment: Monday and Thursday – 2 hours – 6:00 to 8:00pm
Daytime Services:

Intensive Outpatient Treatment: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday – 3 hours – 1:00 to 4:00pm
Non-Intensive Outpatient Treatment: Monday and Thursday – 2 hours – 1:00 – 3:00pm
A patient’s length of time in the program is determined based on an intake assessment. With questions, contact Alan Hejduk, LISW-S at (216) 707.3406 or Buddy Bailey, PhD at (216) 707-3478.

Project DAWN (Deaths Avoided With Naloxone)
Project DAWN is a community-based overdose prevention and education project. This collaboration with MetroHealth enables opioid users to visit The Free Clinic on a walk-in basis to pick up naloxone kits and receive instruction on how to recognize and respond to an overdose and how to administer intranasal naloxone to reverse an opioid overdose. Opioids include heroin and prescription pain medications, such as hydrocodone (Lorcet and Vicodin), oxycodone (Percocet), long acting opioids (Oxycontin, MS Contin and Methodone), and patches (Fentanyl), among others. No appointment is necessary. Walk-ins are welcome on Tuesdays from noon to 4:00pm and Fridays from 1:00 – 5:00pm. For more information, contact Sara Abramovitz at [email protected] or (216) 707-3448 or visit the Ohio Department of Health website.
