My family is also my financial institution (they own a chain of banks) and now, while I am living on the bare minimum and barely able to make ends meet, I am not allowed to know my financial situation because they keep saying "oh we're family we know whats best." I don't want to hire a lawyer because of the fact that it would create a huge rift between my family and I but I want them to realize the conflict of interest and begin treating me like any other client or they need to not be my financial institution. I am at a loss of what to do. It sux.

I don't know if it is because I am not allowed to know or if they are trying to protect me or if they are just wierd when it comes to money. Their kids (my cousins) only live in the best apartments, wear the best clothes etc... I want access to my own finances and they treat me like I am not responsible enough to know. I am 24 years old living on the bare minimum and I have been so responsible that I have not accumulated any debt. I rarely make big purchases and when I do I pay it off as soon as possible. Why won't they stop treating me like a child?

I don't inderstand. Is there some type of trust fund or other monies available to you in which you need one of their signatures for something?

Thats the thing, I have no idea because they won't talk to me about it at all. I want to ask them what I do have access too and they never give me a straight answer. It is getting frustrating.

You may want consider speaking to someone at the FDIC Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The toll free number listed on the website is 877-275-3342.
You may be able call and ask questions without giving your name, I'm not certain. I beleive, The FDIC oversees practices of the banking industry. Someone there may be able to offer a neutral opinion on your situation.

Good advice from GracefulOne. Also, do you have any legal papers about your account? You may want to run this by a Legal Aid rep as well or google "Banking Laws in your state."
